I'm pondering a Ruger Blackhawk Convertible in .357/9mm

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of this gun with cast bullets, particularly cast 9mm?

Any problems with leading with the 9mm?

I'm slowly getting out of autoloaders in favour of single actions and the ability to shoot both my .38 special and 9mm hand loads in the same gun has its appeal, but not if it's more of a novelty than useful, or if one has to shoot FMJ to get the best out of it.

Thanks.

Not sure about 9MM but have one loaded regularly with 38 wadcutters 148 gr 3.1 Bullseye and it's a tackdriver at 20yds.
I would expect the 9MM to be slightly less accurate.

I had one for a while but I found that THE 9 mm was less then great. The 38 and the 357 were good the 9mm was not. These were just my experiences, others I am sure have been different.

I sort of expected that might be the case, since it does seem like something of a compromise.

Thanks

My observations seem to be inline with everyone else. Good accuracy with 357/38 and less so with 9mm. I must say that it is more than accurate enough for plinking away at reasonable ranges and cheap. That is where the value of the 9mm cylinder comes in.

The 9mm cylinder (and the .45ACP) cylinders use a rim, or lip on the inside to set the bullet depth. Too deep and the firing pin will not strike the primer too shallow and the cylinder will not turn. So no crimp on the 9mm (and .45ACP) brass and all should be good. In 9mm lead would be better as it forms better in the bbl. My experience with the 9mm convertable is that it is more accurate than I am. If your shooting .38S, .357 Mag and 9mm out of the same gun how would you expect the sights to be set right for each calibre? The idea is good, different calibres out of the same gun, but in practice it isn't that good. You need to find a load that works good for you and your gun and stick with that I think for great accuracy. Does this mean I avoid these multi calibre guns, hell no? I hate looking for brass in the snow. I have found that Ruger makes the front sight too tall (at least on my .45Colt/ACP) and I need to file the front sight down. Shoots low out of the box by a lot. Also if your shooting lead .38 special you should stick to lead in the other rounds I think, shouldn't jump from lead to cast and back to lead I think, could be wrong.
