I recently bought a used Ruger Blackhawk. When I went to change the grips, I can't get the grip screw out.
I think previous owner used a grip screw that was the wrong length. The grip screw has been screwed right thru the brass grip insert to the unthreaded shank of the screw. I think the brass insert for the grip now has damaged threads. Screw just makes a 'clicking noise' as I try to remove screw.
What's the best way to get the screw out without buggering up the original wood grips.

Does sound like the brass nut is stripped.

Seeing as you can access the end of the screw, support the gun and put pressure on the end to push it out while trying to unscrew it gently from the other side. With luck it will pick up the threads and back out after a turn or two.
Failing that you will want a machinist with a mill or good tight drill press to tackle it.
