I have been thinking about a compact rifle for some time now. I really like Boomer's wife's gun(a husky30.06) and this got me thinking about the ruger compacts in .308. My only hang up is that i want to have open sights as a back up.

I was thinking get a Ruger Compact, get a front sight put on similar to the ruger alaskan with reciever sight on the back, then mount a luepy vx3 1.5-5 on it closer to the action instead of your standard "scout rifle" location.

What are your guys thoughts on this? Good idea or is this retarded?

thanks Fuzzy

I have two Frontiers they are very light handy and extremely accurate, one is a .358 the other a 7-08, with a med. to low power scope I don't miss having iron sights at all, and I shoot alot of iron sighted guns.

I (finally) have a stainless Compact in 308win. I love it. It barks loud, but it is so light and handy to carry. I have a 1x4 Leupy on it, which is just about perfect for the local terrain. I have considered putting open sights on it, but I have my Guide Gun to use in those situations as well.

they are a joy to use. i live in pretty wooded areas so i dont need a long barrelled sniper setup. ive got a 308 and want a 358.

I am really torn about what to get, i already have a 30-30 94win, a bbr in 7mm rem mag and am looking for something either in between or that would outshine both of them as a workhorse for BC hunting and backpacking.

I have also been thinking about something from the "bear line" from Tikka in S.S., a semi custom husky, a ruger alaskan in SS or Ruger Compact.

I have about 8 or 9 months to make up my mind.

decisions decisions:D

keep the input coming

thanks fuzzy

I have several Rugers, among them a Frontier in 358, a 338 RCM, and the newest a 375 Alaskan, all very accurate, dependable rifles.
It would be very difficult to choose one, but for my needs likely the keeper would be the Alaskan in spite of the fact that it is slightly heavier than the other two...
