Ruger Compact; what should I top it with?

Hey guys,

I just received my Ruger compact in 7mm-08. Wow is this gun ever small! I was expecting small but...

Anyways, now comes the part of putting a scope on top of her. I'll probably use it mainly for blacktail in thick bush but I also want to keep my options opened for mulies and possibly goat.

I was thinking the new Elite 6500 1.25X8X32 but the 6" eye relief might be too much as the LOP is 12.5".

I want something light and short. In other words: proportional to the gun. And a bare minimum of 7X magnification. Something in the 11, 12" long, weighing under a pound.

Any thoughts?

Much appreciated,

Alex

I'am going to put a Redfield Revolution 2x7 on mine when it shows up. Limbsaver makes a pre-fit pad that will extend the LOP to 13 inches.

Been thinking of buying one of these guns as well, and yes its very small. My fav. compact scope is Nightforce NXS 2.5x10-32. Might be a little overkill. might not.

A problem with compact scopes imo is finding them with hold-over reticles. Few seem to exist with a 32 ish objective. Not all of us who want a compact scope want a simple duplex.

There is only one scope suitable for that rifle : VX III in 2.5-8x36.

I have one in 338 fed that wears one..... Looks AND works great !

Burris, Leupold and Redfield all offer compact scopes with hold-over reticles.

Yes, you are correct, the Leupold VX-3 with 36 mm object 2.5x8 comes with B&C for example. Sorry, my statement was incomplete. I can't find something like this with non-coin turrets for both elevation & windage. I'm looking for a smaller target turret like the Nightforce compact.

Guys, pardon my ignorance but what's hold-over?

It's when you hold over the intended target to compensate for longer range.

Some reticles have marks on the vertical crosshair below the middle that allow aiming at longer distances while "holding over" with the center of the crosshairs.

Nikon Monarch 2.5-7. Better glass than the Leupies and come in a lot less expensive. In fairness, Nikon could teach Leupold lessons on lens tech. Ask any photographer. Seems the main reason the Leupold is so popular is because there is easy fast service for them. I have never had to do service on any of my scopes in 50yrs FWIW. I have a Luepie VXIII 2.5-8 on my Ruger 30-06 and they are decent scopes but I think they are overpriced. Apparently the US market is about 40%ea for both Nikon and Leupy. I have several Nikons and they are CRISP clear glass to say the least. The Prostaff 4x on my CZ452 is spectacular glass especially for under $200

Leupold

When you buy a Leupold you are buying the lifetime warranty, not just the scope. It's good for the lifetime of the scope, and a reason why they hold their value over time, whereas import scopes are pretty much disposible.

Nikon has a lifetime warranty too.

I had a problem with my Nikon scope, was repaired but not to my satisfaction, returned it again and they sent me a new scope. Leupold are good but IMO overpriced.
