Ruger Frontier Price Check

WHAT!!! Ruger discontinued the Frontier? I feel we shall observe a moment of silence...


... A friend and I were talking about this the other day, and he was saying how much he liked the one I have. The first one I saw, I let it slip by, but the second one didn't, and will never get away. Mine is a 7mm-08 with a Burris 2.75X tacked on top of the chamber. I should have bought a .223 as well for coyote hunting. The problem with the "Scout" concept is that it is so far beyond most shooter's comprehension they reject it simply because there is a bit of real estate between your eye and the lens, and there isn't a gangly pipe to hang up on everything. This will be among my most treasured rifles.

BTW, he's waaay out to lunch on his prices. The Sako maybe a little, and the Ruger by about 700 bucks. Too much crap tacked on there.
 
Well it is a "custom" Frontier, with a "custom" leather bullet holder from a "custom" leather guy. All those custom's add up you know. :p

Let's see:
Frontier $900-$1000 new and still available today as a Compact, Aimpoint $500 or so, bullet holder and sling $100, bipod $120, trigger job & bedding $100, plus minus another $80 and you end up around $1900 to $2000 with taxes and shipping of all the parts ect.

Looks like it's in good shape and well looked after though. I wouldn't say he's making money on it, but he's certainly not loosing either. You wouldn't be getting a deal considering it is used but you're not getting ripped off either. It's a free market, let demand dictate the price. He'd have better luck if he parts it all out.
 
Well nobody put a gun to his head and told him to pile money into these things. Well maybe they did, I wasn't there.

I've had my Frontier for 2 1/2 years now, and have not seen fit to fiddle with it at all. Out of the box it has performed very well. Good trigger, action seems smooth enough. Typically does 3/4 minute groups with factory ammo, and I'm just in the midst of working up a handload.

Well if he can put someone into that rifle, then all the power to you. :cheers: I on the other hand, don't have the Midas touch. So when I purchase, it's usually for keeps.

Quick addition. Just went a-snooping on Ruger's site. They still carry a "version" of the rifle of rifles. Their Hawkeye Compact Laminate. Just missing the quarter rib off of a #1. I'm sure there would be a way to get one installed. Special order or otherwise. I can see how these are not big sellers, maybe one in 50 find it interesting, and out of that 50, maybe 2 or 3 buy one.

Well boys they say any press is good press and judging by the posts.....;)

To be perfectly honest those numbers aren't bad......right on the money for the rifle Gunslinger, but you're off by about 300 bucks on the Aimpoint (not including taxes and shipping.....and it was a real PIA to get ahold of)

The smithing was more as well.....I'll agree on your prices for say a Rem 700, but try and find a reliable, competent smith who wants to bed and do the trigger on a Ruger....

Short Knife - Thanks for the opinion. I'm glad you are having such sucess with your rifle and are such a proponent of the "scout rifle" concept....I think more guys would really like them if they actually tried hunting and shooting with one. Best of luck in your handloads and hunts...regardless if you think I'm out to lunch or not.....:cheers:
 
Hey, like I said, if you can get somebody to buy yours for that price, good on ya. It's not personal, I just think it's a bit much. I'd been a fan of the late Col. Cooper for coming on 17 years now. His scout rifle blew me away when I first read of it. Problem was, and kinda is having the stones to build a custom Steyr rifle to his specs. I just about cried when Ruger came out with the Frontier. I've always avoided scoped rifles due to sluggishness in finding the sight picture. This setup trains you to do it properly. Many coyotes have perished. The little girl gets some strange looks from the belted mag crowd, and only a few of them have come to appreciate it, but would not take the leap. Some flat out refused to touch it. As if doing so would release an ancient curse. The stock could be a bit lighter, or of proper "scout" configuration, but it has grown on me. I plan to take this rifle to New Zealand to hunt someday in the next couple years, but for now, the winter dried jungle of North Central Saskatchewan.

But I have to say, this system is way ahead of its time. Rapid sight aquisition, fast handling, short action, modern powders allow equal velocities from a short barrel as their long action counterparts. What's not to love. I have my doubts that the system would have found major acceptance in a combat role as Cooper had intended though. It fills too small of a niche, but WTF do I know right? :stfun00b:
 
I am pretty sure he is just blowing Smoke, checking to see if there really are idiots who will pay anything. Pretty slick sales talk, he should work for a rifle magazine
