Ruger GP100 forcing cone

So I bought a used stainless Ruger GP100 4.2" from a supporting dealer in BC. I haven't fired it yet but I'm happy with everything - except the forcing cone. It looks like it has gas erosion. Is this normal for a GP100 ? Is the barrel close to the end of its life ?

The serial number puts the manufacturing date as 2012.



 
I just checked mine. It has no where near the amount of erosion as yours. It is about the same vintage and has around 500 rounds (mostly .38 special) through it.
 
That looks rough..lots of magnum rounds maybe?.Here's mine...it's 12.6 so it's more than 20 years old. Don't know total round count, though.

I haven't shot it yet - still waiting for the reg certificate.

I've tried scrubbing it with a brass wire brush and a brass scraper. It's hard and it doesn't come off.
 
I have seen this before. I would not say it is ruined. The test will be to see how it shoots.

This kind of thing tends to happen to all revolvers (357) that have a lot of magnum loads with the light bullets. If you use lead and the larger bullets you never seem to see this kind of thing.

Looks to me more like a "chattering" tooling bit. 2012 was crunch time for Ruger, they couldn't spit out guns fast enough to keep up with demand. The inside of the top strap is spotless, if that were gas cutting you would have another indication on the top strap. I'll bet it was like that when it left the factory.
 
There is some gas cutting on the top strap but nothing I'd worry about.

I don't think it's chattering - the grooves would be more circumferential but these are radial.

I'll contact Ruger and see what they say.

Hodgdon Lil'Gun will do that with lead bullets.
 
Mine doesnt look like that, I bought mine used with "low round count" and I might have a couple hundred rounds through it myself of wolf reloads and my own light reloads.....
 
You'll be very long in the pyramid before you wear out a GP100. Looks like a bit of lead build up to me too. Used stuff is like that. Previous owner was likely too lazy to clean it properly.
 
I've given it a good scrape with brass tools. It doesn't come off and it chews ups the brass tools.

I just don't understand how someone can keep shooting loads like these through the gun when they can see the damage it's doing.

The rest of the gun looks fine.
 
Looks like lead to me also. I would soak it in a proper lead remover and try cleaning again.

What is your cylinder gap? I bet it is tight.
