So I'm torn between these two rifles, at this time I can't justify buying both. Which rifle is the better buy for both hunting and range fun? Looking at deer as the target animal for hunting.

Any input is welcome, even suggestions other than Savage...

Thanks,

Kristian

I have both. If you plan to hunt on the island, the marlin we'll be all you need. Most of your shots well be within the range of the 30-30. If your planning a hunt in the open plains than I would go with the Ruger. Way longer range and more power. The ruger is by far the most useful overall and well likely serve you better in the long term. I have several marlins and they are my favourite firearm. Good luck with your decision.

The Marlin is all you'll need on the Island for hunting. That being said, there's cons too it IMO.
Leverguns handle much nicer without a scope, so if you were planing on hunting with a scoped rifle I'd go with the Ruger. When your constantly in and out of the truck checking out logging cuts a drop mag is handy.

I hunt with an iron sighted/scoped xbolt in 308 and a Marlin 336ss. I love both, but the x-bolt is my go to based on it being more versatile for hunting. The Marlin is more fun to carry during the off season and plinking at the range.

Cheers.
