Ruger Hawkeye .35 Whelen

Rate of twist is 1:16, is that good for the heavier bullets??

In a word - no. But some 16" twist will shoot 300s. But it's a crap shoot over 250 grainers. Woodleigh bullets mailed me a few loads for the 35 Whelen using their 310RN bullet - they noted a 1 in 12" twist was needed in the 35 Whelen. A 12" or 14" would be better for the what is now considered "heavy_for_calibre" bullets.

Another thought (educated (?) guess really) - I bet they actually make it with a 12" twist. Time will tell but they changed to a 12" twist for their 350RemMags and use it in their 358wins. So I think the initial info supplied may be wrong. But time will tell.

Thanks for reporting on that development. A 35 Whelen Hawkeye should be a good big game rifle I think. Yes sights would be better.

I was just going to buy a Ruger and do it myself but since they are going to save me the trouble...

My wife has a Hawkeye in 243 is a great gun...
 
if the 1:16 twist will stabilize a 250 grain Nosler Partition, I think that would satisfy 95% of Whelen owners who probably wont shoot anything heavier
 
It's hard to understand why any gun manufacturer would make a 1:16" twist for a 35cal bbl. No doubt it hurts sales.

Should be at least a 1:14 or faster, if just for sales sake.

The Remington's all have 1:16. I had a Ruger Hawkeye in .358 Win and it was a 1:14. I'm really excited to hear about this new rifle. I want one.

Slooshark1 - If that's true then Ruger's website's specs are wrong as they list it as a 12" twist.

Did you actually check yours and find it different from spec? I'll be checking the twist of my Ruger Frontier 358 now to confirm it's as advertised which is also a 12" twist - but I don't have time tonight.
