Why not eh, we love these kinda threads don't we? I'm leaning towards getting into a CRF rifle for this coming fall. I'm thinking short action in .260, 7-08 or 308 with stainless synthetic. Never shot either but have handled both the Win and Ruger and like them both. Any reason to pick one over the other or any other CRF in that price range? Animals of subject are deer and moose and possibly elk in a couple years when I can get my but to Alberta To hunt with a friend.

What do you like better?

I have never liked the stock on the Ruger's.

I love the stock and particularly the cheek piece on the model 70's even if they are now made from Belgian parts shipped to Portugal for assembly then sent to the FN/Browning plant in the US to be exported to Canada under the free trade agreement :)

I fall into the M77 camp. The Mk II needs a new trigger, but that is all. Of course either will benefit from a bedding job.

I find the Ruger smoother in function. Really both are superb choices and they are my top two choices in the under $1500 bracket.

I recently acquired a Hawkeye and am very happy with it. The stock fits me perfectly and I like the feel of the slimmer throat And fore end. It shoots well and cycles smoothly.
My brother has a Model 70 featherweight and it is also a very nice rifle which shoots well and operates very nicely.
In the end I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.
I know... I'm not much help!

I'm a big Ruger fan... lots of No.1's and M77's.... but there is nothing wrong with M70's either.

well both are the same for me, no more for left handed shooters ... we still have the 375 ruger for lefties that s it ....

A car battery, a set of jumper cables and a glass of water... that's all you need to start shooting right handed... think about it... ;)

Personally I don't think the Ruger can hold a candle to the mod 70..........but what the hell do I know, I hunt dangerous African game with a Remington 700........;);)

Love it... state an opinion and discredit your opinion in the same sentence... you rock.

I currently have one Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 358 win and it is my favourite hunting rifle, and I have had several MKIIs in the past and even a few tang safety rifles as well. All fit the best for me, fit and ergonomics are ideal for my stature. I have only owned one Win 70 and that was a push feed 222 Rem that was a decent shooter but I was disappointed it was not CRF so I sold it.

I think either is fine, get the one that feels best to you.

I have several of each and love them both. I think the M70 metal work looks a bit better maybe but the Ruger is pretty well made as well. The only things I don't like about the M70 are the two piece bolt and the silly looking gas deflector mounted on the extractor collar. Minor things and probably only noticed by a picky sob like me.

You really couldn't go wrong with either as many have stated already.

Love my model 70. The bolt is smoother and nicer than the ruger but both are great rifles. I also prefer the fit of my 70 and the featherweights checkering.
It comes down to personal choice.
