I picked up a bucket list rifle last weekend at the Salmon Arm Gun Show.
A Ruger M77/22 22 Hornet.
It's one of the early models with 1/14 twist rate. No problem, I want it for Rabbits. 35 to 45 grain bullets over Lil Gun powder for 3000fps velocities should play well with head shots.
I had several different boxes of factory ammo to try it out with and a bunch of handloads from another trade. The handloads are all to long for the mag so they will get set back to fit. The loads are in the median range so no problems.
The Hornady, Remington, Winchester loads all grouped into the same point of aim at 100 yards, within a half inch of each other. Surprising but nice. All were 45 grains.
There always seems to be a black sheep. Privi Partisan. 45 grains.
I shot 50 rounds of each factory load, with multiple cleanings to get an idea of what the rifle might like. I also need the brass for my own handloads.
The Privi factory loads were right in there with the others as far as POI/POA and didn't require any scope adjustments. Here's where the problem came in, "FLYERS." At least one in 20. I had three different boxes, with three different lot markings. I shot 40 from the first box with 2 flyers. 20 from the second box with 2 flyers and 20 from the third box with 1 flyer.
No reason for the flyers to be seen. For me, this means the ammo will not be used for hunting. I expect to see the "very odd" flyer from just about any commercially loaded ammo. This was happening to often.
I've had this problem with Privi 6.5x55 and 7x57 in the past.
This little Ruger is a real gem. I've wanted one for years but just couldn't bring myself to put down the dollars. The new rifles are being sold at US$999 in the US. I couldn't find any available in Canada.
When I saw this little rifle last Saturday, I knew it was now or likely never. Fast, light, accurate and the bolt is smooth as glass with a 1 1/2 pound trigger. It didn't come with rings but luckily Del Selin's had a set of 4B (medium) rings on hand. Just right for a Leupold VariX III 4-10 with AO. The whole thing went together right from the start. It only took some very minor adjustments to zero the scope by bore sighting and when I put the first few rounds down range, the were within an inch of POA. That's a rare experience for me. It boded good things to come.
Good things did come. It isn't the least bit fussy about which factory loads it shoots. I can mix them up in the mag and still be confident of taking out bunny heads at 100 yards or more.
I like Ruger No1 rifles, I like their shotguns but I've never been a fan of their bolt action rifles. This little 77/22 Hornet is an eye opener.
Great rifle, I'm looking forward to working up loads for it with up to 13.0 grains of Lil Gun under 35 grain Vmax bullets over CCI magnum primers.
