I picked up a bucket list rifle last weekend at the Salmon Arm Gun Show.

A Ruger M77/22 22 Hornet.

It's one of the early models with 1/14 twist rate. No problem, I want it for Rabbits. 35 to 45 grain bullets over Lil Gun powder for 3000fps velocities should play well with head shots.

I had several different boxes of factory ammo to try it out with and a bunch of handloads from another trade. The handloads are all to long for the mag so they will get set back to fit. The loads are in the median range so no problems.

The Hornady, Remington, Winchester loads all grouped into the same point of aim at 100 yards, within a half inch of each other. Surprising but nice. All were 45 grains.

There always seems to be a black sheep. Privi Partisan. 45 grains.

I shot 50 rounds of each factory load, with multiple cleanings to get an idea of what the rifle might like. I also need the brass for my own handloads.

The Privi factory loads were right in there with the others as far as POI/POA and didn't require any scope adjustments. Here's where the problem came in, "FLYERS." At least one in 20. I had three different boxes, with three different lot markings. I shot 40 from the first box with 2 flyers. 20 from the second box with 2 flyers and 20 from the third box with 1 flyer.

No reason for the flyers to be seen. For me, this means the ammo will not be used for hunting. I expect to see the "very odd" flyer from just about any commercially loaded ammo. This was happening to often.

I've had this problem with Privi 6.5x55 and 7x57 in the past.

This little Ruger is a real gem. I've wanted one for years but just couldn't bring myself to put down the dollars. The new rifles are being sold at US$999 in the US. I couldn't find any available in Canada.

When I saw this little rifle last Saturday, I knew it was now or likely never. Fast, light, accurate and the bolt is smooth as glass with a 1 1/2 pound trigger. It didn't come with rings but luckily Del Selin's had a set of 4B (medium) rings on hand. Just right for a Leupold VariX III 4-10 with AO. The whole thing went together right from the start. It only took some very minor adjustments to zero the scope by bore sighting and when I put the first few rounds down range, the were within an inch of POA. That's a rare experience for me. It boded good things to come.

Good things did come. It isn't the least bit fussy about which factory loads it shoots. I can mix them up in the mag and still be confident of taking out bunny heads at 100 yards or more.

I like Ruger No1 rifles, I like their shotguns but I've never been a fan of their bolt action rifles. This little 77/22 Hornet is an eye opener.

Great rifle, I'm looking forward to working up loads for it with up to 13.0 grains of Lil Gun under 35 grain Vmax bullets over CCI magnum primers.

Del's wagon was broken.

I am pretty much computer illiterate compared to most on this site. My fourteen year old grandson walked circles around me on computers before he started elementary school.

Luke, good to see you as well.

I've got another 22 Hornet on a Winchester Model 43. It's also extremely accurate with every commercial round of the same 45 grain bullet weight. It's going to be a tough call on which rifle to keep. The Winchester has an inline detachable mag, which extends below the stock in just the wrong place. The Ruger on the other hand has a rotary magazine which can be cranky to load but it's flush with the stock at the carry point. Both are ergonomically correct for my build.

I really appreciate accurate firearms. It's the main reason I have a well stocked private machine shop. No first tier computer operated stuff but some very decent quality equipment that allows me to produce some very work so that I can assemble firearms that shoot better than I can hold.

Both of the rifles I've mentioned are capable of such accuracy, off the shelf.

At first I was a bit disappointed. I also really wanted a 22K hornet, which I used to have in a lovely little Martini, whose now deceased owner just had to open up to 225 Winchester. Now that's a snorting 22 cal for a small Martini action. Another project I hope to complete and enjoy.

Luke, look at the new loads out there for the 22 Hornet with Lil Gun powder. They are very impressive in such a small round, over 3000fps. The K Hornet doesn't perform much better, even with the new Lil Gun powder. Not enough for me to ream out the chamber.

The 22 Hornet gets a bad name for split necks. That's because the shooters aren't re annealing the cases often enough IMHO. I've got a 50 round box of Winchester cases that have a dozen reloads on them and they still look good. I re anneal them after 3 shots. Only takes a few minutes.

Now to decide. I have a feeling the 43 Winchester will be going to Victoria with me next weekend for their annual Saanich Fairgrounds two day show.

Good choice in rifles. I've loved the 77 short platform for years. Bought a 77/22 H a few years ago from this sight but haven't played with it too much.

Maybe I missed it, but did you mention which version of 77/22 Hornet that you bought? I have had half a dozen of them over the years, a couple of the VT heavy barrel laminate stock rifles, a rare version of factory VT in walnut and the rest were the walnut/blued sporters... the sporters are my favourite version for the Hornet round... they are trim and light to carry and have been darn near as accurate as the VT's out to 200 yards. I can PM some loads that worked well for me if you like, but I will have to go back in my logbook to find them. Lil' Gun has been the best powder overall... and the 40 grain V-Max was the most accurate bullet used. They are nice rifles, made considerably nicer by the rotary magazine... however, there in lies the crunch... the magazine really restricts the OAL available for loading. At the range I did my fair share of single jacking longer bullets, and if you want to see tighter groups, that is the way to go... even with your 14 twist, the magazine will be restrictive... if head shooting rabbits is the only purpose, you really don't need extreme accuracy... I did a fair bit of head shooting jacks out to 200 yards, but mostly within 150 yards... I also used the rifles as fox guns, and they are just about perfect for that.

I don't currently have a 77/22 Hornet... I have been downloading my .222's and .223's down to Hornet levels to accomplish the same terminal effect... but I can definitely see another one in my future... a Walnut Sporter woukd pair nicely with my M77 MKII Walnut/Blued .220 Swift when getting after the coyotes & foxes at camp.

It'a a Walnut stocked, blued sporter. If I'm reading the serial number correctly it was made in 2003.

I tried a couple of loads today with two different bullets. One was the 35gr Amax and the other 40grAmax.

I was impressed with both but the 35gr Amax over 13.2 gr of Lil Gun performed the best as far as consistent accuracy goes.

Thanx for the offer tho on the handloads.

Always wanted one in a Ruger but was turned off by the hit and miss accuracy claims and the price. It’s a very nice platform. Still would like to try one. Ended up with a Browning A Bolt Micro Medallion. No complaints on my part.

Lil Gun, 40 VMax and Federal Small Pistol Primers are awesome. Hurts gophers bad. I do plan to try it out on some coyote stands.

I like the 77-22 but like to seat the bullets out farther than the mag allowed. My son is a fan of the Hornet as well, he just got my Browning micro madalion. Is happy! I was left with a Ruger #3 and am happy with the loads I have for it. But, at the Hanna show there were a lot of #1s. I was able to pass on all but one in Hornet. ( I am trying to reduce my numbers :) ) I’ve used up all of my 680 so now will try some lil gun.

I agree, I think he forgot about it though.
