I have searched for actual action screw torque on this here interweb and all I can come up with is snug, tighten the angle front screw snug, then the rear screw snug, re-snug the front screw then install the front trigger guard less snug, not to over snug it. I am a torque spec kinda guy, my torque wrench is missing the "snug" value. I was wondering if anyone has the torque value and procedure for a target model M77?

Thanks, and happy new year.

The very best thing you can do is take your screw driver to the range. Shoot a group, tighten the screws, shoot another, tighten etc.. Also try different tightening procedures as well as leaving the middle screw loose. That angle screw will tilt the action downwards if you tighten it up first and too tight. You can see the tang lift up.

My method for a bedded Ruger is to tighten the front screw just a little to pull the recoil lug back. Then tighten the middle screw to hold the reciver flat then fully tighten the front and finally the rear.

I have 2 bedded rugers that I have to do this with if I want to get the best out of them. The third shoots well no matter what you do and is not bedded.

years ago, when I had a Ruger with a tang safety, I read an article where a plumber's tap washer was placed between the angle screw and the stock. Snug was as tight as you could turn a screw driver. I sold the rifle before I tried this bedding procedure. I have trouble getting over 25 inch pounds when I tighten to snug. Trial and error should find the best results in a manner as suggested by CB.

For both of my Bedded rifles (the action is bedded the full length) they shoot best with HOLY CRAP TIGHT torque, I never actually measured it.

I know Weatherby was 50 inch pounds and Ruger said way more than that. If I remember right it was 75 or more likely 100. My ruger was as tight as I could get it and was 1/2" gun on occasion. And if you go more than 12 in/lbs on Remington I hear you can twist the action, giving all kinds of problems.
