Ruger m77 and Marlin xl7 opinions

The Ruger M77 is a very well built rifle, controlled round feed, heavy claw extractor, and a blade style ejector. Some people like this set up, some don't. I find this type of Mauser set up makes working the action not quite as smooth as say a Remington push feed, or Tikka or Browning, but it works and is very reliable. But to qualify that, I have never experienced any problems with any brand of push feed.

I was shooting a friends newly aquired M77 Hawkeye yesterday, chambered in 358 winchester in a stainless/synthetic version. Very nice handling rifle, light and came to the shoulder very naturally, and it shot very well too!

I would not hesitate on a Ruger M77, in fact I think the stock ergonomics are one of the nicest in the industry. I can not speak about the Marlin as I have no experience with them, but by all accounts they are a decent rifle too. Good luck!

Those two rifles are in a very different class..... The Marlin is a great rifle for teh price.... The Ruger is a great rifle period.....

What Brad said. I have a Hawkeye in .257 Roberts. It's accurate, and solid. Closing the bolt feels like locking up a bank vault. The stock ergonomics absolutely are great, a huge improvement over the M77 MkII stock. I really like the slimmer wrist and forend, and the wraparound checkering. My rifle has a good trigger and I'm happy with its performance.

I prefer a removeable magazine on a rifle, and that's not an option on the Ruger, but that's a small detail to me.

It all depends what you want to spend.

Thats righr.
Over here a Ruger is twice the price of the Marlins...
Althoigh both guns shoot bullets down the tube!
If your on a budget go the Marlin . if money isnt too much of an issue Ruger do make a nice gun. i love my mk2 whelen. 3 posi safety is

also nice feature

There doesnt seem to be much wrong with Marlins though!

Thanks for your thoughts. I had a feeling the Ruger was the better choice, but not having shot either one, it's hard to know. Cheers.
I wouldn't say the Ruger is a better choice as both are good rifles.

The Marlins are priced well, give a lot of nice features and have a very good reputation for accuracy. There have been many reports as such here in CGN and other forums. Anyone who has owned one likes them.

The Ruger is a fine rifle as it's nicer finished product. It offers a swing safety and drop floorplate, but will also cost a couple hundred dollars more new.

Go pick up both and check them out. Neither will be a disappointment.
