Hello all I was hoping to pick from someone’s knowledge in hopes of finding an answer to my dilemma. I have been given one of these stocks that was a take off. It is in fantastic shape. I quite like this stock and would like to purchase a rifle to drop the barrelled action into my stock. Original rifle was a 338 win mag. What are my options of actions that will drop in here? I would like another 338 win mag but I may go with a 30/06 or 300 win mag. What other long actions were available that will fit for me?What rifles should I be looking for that will fit in this stock? Stainless steel is definitely a must. Thank you all for your help. This rifle is intended to be an all around work horse for hunting moose and black bear in the thick rocky bush’s of northern Ontario.

Any long action Mark II or Hawkeye series rifles will fit your stock. The non Magnum long actions will have a little space around the barrel in the forend, which is not a big deal. The 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag will fit perfectly. The .25/06, .270, .280, .30/06 and .35 Whelen will fit with a slightly slimmer barrel profile.

Hoyt knows his stuff. Good advice. You should also consider replacing that hard and painful recoil "pad" with one that actually works. I replaced mine with a pre-fit Limbsaver. Much more comfortable.

As above. Ruger basically made 2 contours of barrels for these stocks. Magnum and non magnum. It it was a 338 it would definitely be the magnum contour. So 7mm, 300, 338.

They made three contours for the Zytel Stock rifles; Magnum, Standard and Ultralight.

I thought the ultra lights had a shorter LOP.

They have a bit of a cult following. I have one but find it very uncomfortable to shoot in the 300.

The prices on those stocks (& rifles) is amazing these days.

My hunting partner sourced one in 280. He offered it to me, but I already have a 280 so passed. Would have taken it otherwise.

You are confusing the Ultralight with the Compact. The Ultralight has a 20" pencil profile barrel and a full LOP stock. The Compact has a 16.5" pencil profile barrel and a short 12.5" LOP stock. Ruger did make Zytel Ultralight rifles, but they never made Zytel Compact rifles.

I had a few canoe paddle rifles, although I either sold them or swapped out the stock. I learned 2 things with my canoe paddle in 338 WM-The 338 didn't kill moose or bear any better than my 300 and the canoe paddle stocks were not great for cartridges that recoil more than about a 7RM. Even the 7RM fit was improved and it was easier to shoot with an aftermarket stock.

In the larger calibers, the 7mm has the 270-30-06 barrel profile which is the lighter one. The 300 WM and 338 have the larger barrel diameter. I know because I had both.

Not necessarily, they made the standard profile and the medium weight (magnum) profile in both the 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag in certain iterations. As far as I know the .338 WM was only done with the medium contour barrels.

In the case of the OP's situation, I would not be concerned about the barrel profile for any long action Mark II or Hawkeye rifle... the standard weight barrels will have a little more room in the barrel channel, but this is only likely to be beneficial, other than it collecting spruce needles will brush busting.

If you are interested I have a m77mkII IN 30-06 that I could let go. Pm me for more info and photos!

I had one in .300WM with a limbsaver pad. It was actually pretty pleasant to shoot. I kinda liked the zytel stock, and likely would have kept it but I had too many .300WMs at the time. I don't know that I'd pay the premiums people are asking these days.

I went the other way.... my stainless MkII in 7.69x39 came in a 'boat paddle' stock. Hated it so much I ditched it for a regular synthetic off a Hawkeye & never looked back.....
