my first pistol was the Browning 1911-22-A1...something that's 75% the size of the original. it feels 'smallish' in my hands, but not too much.

I just got my SS Mark III Target w/5.5" BB and the thing is friggen huge. I dare say, it's almost difficult to hold for my 'smaller' hands. and cripes is it heavy. my 1911-22 ain't got nothing on this beast.

Actually just an old kayak support we use, mostly because I couldn't find any sandbags locally to buy yet. Any kind of support will do really! Had a problem when we first got ours, turned out the cross pin holding the trigger group together had slipped out and everything was cocked just a bit!
 
My bull-barrel 5.5 inch MKII is 40 oz (1.1 Kg) {from memory}. Once you build up your forearm muscles it holds really steady :)
 
Nice pistol buddy. Though heavy, it is very accurate, I have a Browning Buckmark Contour 5.25, probably as heavy as your Mk III because of the added barrel weight.

How do you like the contour? I'm on the fence between the 2 (5.5 stainless MKIII)

If you honestly think that the Ruger is big and heavy then you'd best start hitting the gym or doing pushups. Most handguns are that big and heavy.

On the other hand it's likely that you're just caught by how much bigger and heavier it is than the dainty little scale model Browning. A gun which doesn't actually fit many of us correctly just because it IS so small.

Gdawg, I don't own a Buckmark with the contour grips but I've handled and shot some belonging to my range buddies. It's a superb fit in every way for me with my Large to XLarge glove size hands.
 
Try both. I like the weight distribution and grips of the Buckmark Contour. I had a chance using a Mk III and it is good. They are at least at par overall.
Some likes Ruger, some Browning, some 1911-22s regardless if it is conversion. It will always be your final decision as to what you will eventually buy. You're happy, we are all happy with our purchase, we all win. Safe shooting!

My uncle got the Buckmark, I have to agree it's not bad for the ham fisted.
 
so, I'm a ninny when it comes to mechanical stuff (thank god for gunsmiths), but at the range today, I only got two shots off because it refused to chamber a round. would get stuck when it hit the back of the bullet to lift up.

I'm not sure if perhaps the springs are so spunky on the new mags that it doesn't have the power to chamber, but yeh, no go. I oiled the action yesterday, ran some patches down the barrel (not dirty, no surprise for a new gun).

thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Are you useing Winchester ammo??
