Hi folks, I am looking for a little bit of help to select my first .22 pistol. I realize the heavy barrel Ruger likely sets the standard for being an economical and reliable entry level .22 pistol, however I love the styling and barrel design of the S&W series so I looked at a few reviews that stated these .22's are very accurate and reliable as well.

Anyone shooting the S&W? I would love to hear your thoughts on them or input in general....

Thanks!

I have a ruger mark III and i've shot the S&W and I find myself more accurate with the S&W.

The ruger is a ##### to take apart and clean.

If you're talking about the S&W 617, 10-shot cylinder, it's a joy to shoot and is extremely accurate. I'm talking about the revolver (comparing it to a Ruger semi is not fair to either.) I'm kind of lucky; my club has both that I could use whenever I feel like it (and they're not taken). This gave me the opportunity to own my first revolver (Heritage Rough Rider, Single Action six-shooter mwith a 6.5" barrel) and semi (GSG 1911).

I agree with Wendell - if you can find a MkII, you'll be better off. The MkIII has some pretty ridiculous safety "features". I have a MkIII 22/45 (I couldn't find a MkII) but I managed to disable both the magazine disconnect and the loaded chamber indicator. It took some work but it was worth it.

The Rugers are a bit of a PITA to disassemble, but once you do it a few times, it gets pretty easy. I can strip mine down and put it back together in under a minute now.

This is all great info folks, thanks for sharing it! Keep it coming as I am all ears. I would really like to purchase the S&W 22-A1 .22 pistol so long as it is comparable to the Ruger. On the other hand, I may just purchase both and decide which suits me better and keep the other as a back up at the range......
