Hey...

just looking for some help in buying a 22 pistol. Im looking a getting either the ruger mark III or a sig mosquito.

Which one would be better for target and overall fun?

I was also looking at the walther p22. I have not fired any of these pistols before.

You opinions would be great!

thanks

I did alot of research on what .22 pistol to buy and ended up going with the Ruger. The model has been around for years so it is well tested. The Mark III has alot of extra safety features over the Mark II that alot don't like, so some people recommend getting a Mark II if you can find one. I am still waiting for my RPAL so I can't comment on how it shoots yet. It is being stored where I bought it.

been told that that ruger is a very successfull .22LR handgun, lots and lots of people use it and problems are very limited.
I have read about reliability issues with the mosquito and the p22, I have seen photo's of p22's slides broken.
I have no first hand experience, just stuff that I have read/seen.

I would look for a used Ruger MKI pistol. I have a 4" that is one of my favorite pistols. Mine looks just like the one in the photo. I would also take a long look at a CZ75B Kadet as I like it almost as much as my Ruger. Regards, Richard:)

I have a Sig Mosquito, Sport model. It's a nice handgun. The weight is good, it has a nice balance. The feel of the grip in my hand is very comfortable. The sights are standard, and could be improved with a nice aftermarket set.

My only complaint is that this pistol is very particular when it comes to what kind of ammo it will chew through. Mine prefers CCI top quality ammo.

Even with that, it will FTF or FTL once or twice within the first 15-20 rounds shot that day. Once the barrel gets warmed up, it's smoother than silk.

Takedown is easy, and the entire gun is easy to clean and service. My Sport model came with a "Target Package". This included a Bridgemount that attaches to the Picatinny rail. A 1 inch Red Dot sight is included, as are the rings that attach it to the mount.

Overall, if you want a nice pistol for punching holes in paper that's easy to clean and maintain, then you'll want to put the Sig Mosquito on your short list.

P.S., the Ruger was my 2nd choice. The deciding factor was the difficulty in takedown for cleaning.

I have sweared to myself WILL NOT buy one Ruger .22 pistol but now I am buying the second one:D. Bought one 2245 Mark III last year and very itch to get a standard 6" Mark III. Owned a p22 and is a ####ing nightmare, won't suggest to anybody. Go for the Mark II or Mark III, give it a good clean before head off the range and it will give you hell of fun time. Don't forget to bring some worn out golf ball and plink heck out of them.

I bought a Mosquito for my son and it's been a blast to shoot from the day we first took it to the range. It works with everything we've tried but Federal seems to work really nicely. I does have a Fail to Fire every once and a while but not as often as the older ones did. It's the same kit that csmith99 has, the red dot actually works quite well for a "super cheap" red dot.:)

well, Im, definitely going to buy a ruger. If I cant find a mark II I'll go for the mark III 22/45 hunter.

Im still considering the mosquito too. Maybe if a used one comes up I'll it pick up.

Buy the Ruger. Absolutely reliable and eats anything. As mentioned, the Sig is picky about it's diet, and the P22 has serious issues with it's slide. I wouldn't touch either, but then I'm biased- I have a Ruger mk.1 that I love , so I'd advise you to consider a Mk.1 as well. :)

Not 100% sure but isn't the 22/45 frame made in plastic???? If that's the case, I would go for a standard all metal Ruger. I have a Competition Target model in SS with a 6-7/8'' barrel. It will be last gun I sell.

I'll have to check it out..I do want an all metal frame.

Thanks for the heads up..

Get a stainless model. The fit/finish is better. 5 1/2 bbl target model is a good all around gun. I have a blued one and wish I bought stainless instead. That being said I also have a stainless Ruger MKIII Hunter. So it worked out :D.

Yea, the stainless mkIII look sweet with the bull barrels. I was looking at those from PD. I think they were $499. Are they worth the price?

anyone who has had both the ruger and the mosquito have any comments about the quality of the trigger and the sights as comparison, curious about it, and would appreciate your first hand experience.

for 22 pistols, i have stuck with browning challengers II and III, and high standard military models, and not ventured beyond these yet. thanks.

Don't forget about the browning buckmark.

Out of the two listed, I'd go with the Ruger. The sig Mosquito is overpriced for a 22LR that only woks on CCI mini mags.

If you want to go a step up and have the money to spend check out the Smith and Wesson model 41 and Hammerli Xesse.

The Kimber .22LR Super and Target are in that increased price range as well. I was just noticing the number of WTB adds for these in the EE. That's a pretty significant price hike though. I'm leaning toward the MKIII 22/45 right now.

Yeah I think the Kimber target models come with a 1" at 25 yards guarantee.

The CZ kadet is another contender for that price bracket. I don't know how well it performs though.

I have a Ruger MK III 22/45 and I like it. I've only put about 400 rounds through it, but it's functioned with every type of .22 ammo I could get from wal mart/canadian tire without any problems. I just wish my Ultimate Clip Loader would hurry up and get here so I save my thumb from loading the mags!
