Ruger mini 30 and mini 14

Standard Mini's are fun to shoot, but not accurate enough for the money demanded. The new Target Mini is reported to be much more accurate than the standard. Lotta money though.

No idea what you mean by target shooting.
Informal plinking in a gravel pit? Either. Formal competition? Neither.
7.62x39 has the advantage of rather inexpensive factory ammunition at present.

The "target" mini-14 can be about as accurate as an AR15, and it's non-restricted.
the mini-30 fires a round that can be almost as powerful as .30-30, and in my (very limited) experience is more accurate than the standard mini-14.

Srsly tho', if you're looking for something that fires 7.62 ComBlok, get a nice SKS, they are as accurate and much less money.
For a .223, if you aren't looking at the Target Mini, I'd really be thinking about the Remington Pump (7615?), it can use the 10 shot pistol mags and I'd bet that it'd be more accurate.
Unless you are thinking about target shooting and you'll only ever do it at an approved range, then you should be thinking about an AR15.

Benell mr-1 very accurate, non restricted shoot as good as rifles twice the price with full proof reliability... JP.

The Mini-30's of a lot more use to most, as it takes coyotes better than .223 even, is more accurate than the Mini-14 in my experience (been through a lot of Minis), and it's good for deer too which the Mini-14 won't do. On top of that, it has extremely inexpensive ammunition available, $200 per 1,000 rounds at present.

Buy one of the new 580 or higher series Minis with the barrel bulge ahead of the gas block, and you'll be blown away- a LOT has changed with Mini accuracy. Mine has done 1.5" for three (barrel warms up quick naturally), and I bet with more load tweaking I may just beat that. It's dropped a few jaws at the range and I haven't had it long.

For a stainless, repeating carbine that's of bulletproof quality, now very accurate, for under 900 bucks often, it's a hard deal not to appreciate.

My 580 series will do pretty much 1.5" (depending on me) with 69 grain match handloads (Nosler or PRVI bullets).

The Mini 30 is a little more practical, but mags are a little harder to find. I think the Mini 30 is an ideal walk around deer rifle.

Couple hutterites with mini 14's won the Selkirk Wholesale Sports pin shoot this year. Beating teams with AR's, bolt rifles or combinations thereof. Apparently the harmonic tuner, can really do some magic if you take the time to use it.

Ah, I was wondering if you were feeding it handloads, Ardent. I admit I've been looking at the newer Mini's for awhile now. They seem to have decent accuracy these days. Considering most of the coyotes I've called in have been under 250 yards, it's probably just as good (or better) a choice than a bolt action, especially if 2 come in at once.

According to the internet, it's about 2008 and newer 580 series that have the slightly heavier barrel.
I was hoping to trade my norc m14b for one, but it doesn't seem like it'll happen.
