I got a used Ruger MK2 that is a bit loose. I mean the forward little lug that holds the top assembly in place is loose. You know how you have to hit back end of top assembly hard to get the top off, well this one is loose enough that it comes apart easily.
Is this normal after being used for awhile?
are only the new pistols tight and need hard hit?
will it being loose cause damage?

Are you saying the little hook itself is loose or that the fit between the frame and upper is loose? I know my MKII requires a rubber hammer for both assembly and disassembly, but others simply slide right off without issue. I wouldn't worry about it really, there is no damage to be caused and reliability will be unaffected.

That's a common problem with some MKII Rugers. The fix is simple, remove barrel , put the top of the frame where it cradles the barrel in a vice and tighten ever so slightly. Test fit barrel and repeat if it is still loose.

Most MK 1's and 2's are not easy to OMGWTF hard to take off. With time some get a bit easier and in other cases people just give up taking the barrel off to clean and leave it on the frame.

Your's seems to be a bit to easy but before you do anything I need to ask. Is something wrong that needs to be fixed ? Is the gun shooting shotgun type patterns as groups ?

Simple answer is, if it's not broke don't fix it. Quite a few people would be jealous to have your gun without all the headaches often associated with Ruger disassembly.

Once you've disassembled a Ruger Mk. a couple of times, it's no big deal. There's rarely a need to disassemble anyway, given how reliable they are.

I agree.
It's easy to tighten them up if you have a good vice and use something(wood, plastic, leather etc.) to protect the metal.
Who knows how or why it got loose but the fix is easy.

OK, there's room for some misunderstanding in your post.

When you said the "I mean the forward little lug that holds the top assembly in place is loose." do you mean that the small lug itself is loose in the lower frame and you can wiggle it around? Or are you saying that it slips easily into the slot of the upper and that the frame is easily set by hand with no mallet? The difference is important.

If the lug itself is loose and wiggly in the lower frame then it should be fixed. The lug is held in by a big riveted over pin and over use of the mallet in the past could have beaten the swaging loose.

On the other hand if you simply mean that you can assemble the frame and upper by hand with no "love taps" from a mallet then that's different. As long as there is no rattle or play you're fine. In fact you've got the perfect fit as long as there's no play when together. It doesn't NEED to be really tight. It's just that a little tight is better than a little loose.
