Old faithful, my Ruger Mk2 Target is starting to wear down and I am required to start replacing some parts. I intend to replace:

1.The guide rod and spring with a volquartsen kit.

2. Firing pin and extractor with the Volquartsen kit.

Would anything else be worth changing or upgrading while I'm at it. I use it for some rimfire 2 Gun matches and plinking.

... Is the feel, function of the upgraded gun worth the cost?

Depends what you're looking for. There's nothing "wrong" with a stock Mk2, but of course it can be improved. Many people would say that spending your upgrade budget on a good red dot would improve the shooting experience more than changing anything else about the pistol.

That's kind of where I'm at, The Mk2 runs so good to start with, the only reason I'm "upgrading" is because the stock components are wearing down after 50 years of good service. Thought getting it drilled and tapped for an optic is very tempting, just don't know who I would trust in my area to do the work.

Do a trigger job..or purchase & install a Volquartsen adjustable trigger.

Cut the extractor inside radius so it does NOT push a burr into the chamber at 3 oclock.

Radius the aft edge of the chamber w/a bullet nose shaped Cratex point for reliable feed/function.

Inspect the firing pin for a burr at the aft end from hammer strikes...if no burr is present....run it.

Having a spare recoil spring assy is nice to have on hand.

I wouldn't hesitate to ship it to an established shop. Lots of "local" guys aren't licensed to work on firearms (and don't know that they need to be). And as you say, lots of them aren't up to the task in the first place.

I'd guess there's a dovetail mount rail adapter option, too. It's certainly inferior to a proper mount, but a cheap experiment if you wanted to see if you like using a red dot before investing the time and money of getting it drilled and tapped.

If you haven't shot a handgun with a red dot before... It's a game changer for most people.

There are clamp on scope mounts available for Ruger 22's. - dan
