My mid 2000's production 45-70 No.1-S had short throat got it lengthened a bit to increase case capacity not too pricey required < 2hrs shop time.
The Ruger #1's I've had in .45-70 all had standard SAMI throats. Zero freebore and 12.5 degree per side leade angle into the rifling. Lots of loads listed in various reloading manuals would not chamber. Mine would not chamber most heavy jacketed 400gr bullets unless seated way deeper than the crimp ring, other than the Rem 405gr. I had the throat lengthened on the first rifle, just added a small amount of freebore, and it worked very well. I didn't bother with the second rifle, I just shot Speer 350gr bullets which would chamber at the correct OAL.
