Ruger No.1 loose buttstock

• 450M No.1-S scope change noticed by chance loose buttstock
• reviewed assembly diagram fix requires removing recoil pad to access stock bolt
• guessed right phillips #2 to remove recoil pad apply grease to prevent tearing pad
• buttstock hex bolt slotted to tighten just need long enough large blade screwdriver
• bolt quite loose needed about full turn to tighten up
• re-installed recoil pad all ok like it never happened

You should remove the stock and seal all that bare wood that has no finish...

That would be a nice all weather improvement.

Also prevents shrinking which is likely what caused the loose bolt.

Find a warsher that will fit the hole.
Less chance of the wood eating the bolt head.

Those are some well taken photos for illustration. Yes to the sealing of any bare wood surfaces.

Never thought of this before don't know if any off the shelf rifles are factory sealed right thing to do especially for hunting in the rain (although my synthetic or laminate stock rifles fill that role).

My Anschutz M1782 & M1771 stocks are factory sealed they done good.
