I ended up with little gem of a ruger no 1 but because of were i live i think i would like to rechamber to something bigger. It is a 30-30 (not factory)right now and was told the barrel is a benchmark.I just don't see myself using it as much as i would like because of the small caliber.I had a run in this year with a big grizz and had thought about bringing this gun before i left.Rather glad i had the 350 rem mag instead. Is it a simple rechambered to .308?What caliber options do i have with out costing a mint and who would you send it to do the work if it was yours?

I would leave it as a .30-30... but it would be a simple job to rechamber it to a .303- .308, keep the rim. Lee .303 Brit dies come with two sizing spindles in .308" and .310"... so that is the way I would go... pretty rifle... send it to anyone, rechambering is a simple job, any Smith should be competent at it.

You say you were glad you had the .350 RM with you... did you actually have to use the rifle on the grizzly?

Hey Hoyt i would think about the 303 but as it would be the only other no 1 i have happens to be in 303.That one is special so it stays.Yes i did end up killing the bear that came into my moose calls at about 50 yards.I'am a little unsure how i would have felt with the 30-30 in my hands as i was solo and along ways from town.DSCF8202.jpg

If you already have a No.1-A in .303 Brit, I would leave this one as a .30-30... try the 150 NBT in it, you might be surprised at what it can do with a stiff load of LVR. I would not bother with another .30 cal, the only way it makes sense to me would be to rebore or rebarrel to .338 or .35 and go with the .30/06 case.

I take it that you had a grizzly tag, nice bear.

Rechambered to 300h&h?
That would be my pick.
Not sure what twist rate your barrel is, but if it would work, that is what I would be running, classy gun in a super classy cartridge.

Beautiful rifle.

What's the barrel length ? If under 24" I'd rechamber to .308 or 30-06. If 24" or over I'd then consider 300 Win mag, 300 H&H, or 308 Norma mag.

Or sell the barreled action and replace with another in your choice of cartridge.

I will be building a No.1 International .348 one day soon.

:redface:Not meaning to hijack the thread, but the 348WCF is my favorite lever gun calibre. I had one in a standard grade model 71 Winchester, which I foolishly sold and regretted doing so five minutes later:(. However, I lucked out and picked up a mint deluxe model 71 at a local gun show a couple of years ago:d. ;)life is good.

30/40 Krag would be cool if you want to keep the rim.
Same performance as a 308win.
Brass is challenging to find however.

a ruger #1 in 348 win or 356win would be awsome.

and nice Grizz, big for a yukon bear certainly.

Beautiful rifle, love the fiddleback! A fleur-de-lis checkering would finish it of nicely! I would re-chamber it to a 308 Win.

It can be re chambered to any .30 caliber where the case is larger than the 30-30. It does not have to be a rimmed case. Rimless or belted all work.

Knock your socks off with a .300 Ultra Mag...

Either leave it as is or sell it and buy what you want.

I kinda think that rifle in 30-30 is cool. A bit of checkering would really finish it off nicely.
