I wanted to increase the eye relief for my #1 .416, and additionally I wanted the ocular to be in line with the face of the falling block. Mounting the scope in this fashion gave me two advantages, firstly I couldn't be hit by the scope when the rifle recoiled - regardless how I was holding and regardless of the angle I was shooting, and secondly it kept the loading port clear for quicker reloading. My solution was to have a custom quarter rib made up for the rifle, which had the mounting points further forward. This solution only makes sense however if you are using a low power scope - otherwise you will not get a full field of view. You could check with some gunsmiths to see if this route is viable for your application.
