My Ruger No 3 in 45/70 is hard on my right hand knuckles. No matter how I hold, the curved lever/trigger guard nails me every shot. It seems to me that a lever something like a Martini Henry would eliminate the problem. I think the present lever is too short to modify and in any event I would hesitate to undertake the job. I would appreciate comments.
Thanks

No 3 finger buster

I wrapped the lever with a leather shoe lace. It looked pretty good and stopped the pounding. I only wrapped the portion that com into contact with my knuckles. What type of loads are you using? I found I had to back up to Remington 405 grs factory loads to get the recoil down to a comfortable level. The No 3 is a very strong gun but it is a way too light for any heavy .45-70 loads to be fired in comfort. Just my two cents...

cheers, Darryl

I have seen a No. 3 lever cut & welded & reblued to a different pattern. You want to have this done by someone who knows what he is doing.

Will work on your suggestions. My best load is 51 Grs H-322 with Sierra 300 Gr FNHP. Don't hunt much anymore - just plink away - sometimes get 3 shot groups in 2 l/2 inches @ 100 yrds original open sights. At 78 Years I"m happy with that. Cheers
