This is a good point. .38 Spl can be shot safely out of a .357 gun but after a while, "crud rings" build up inside the chambers, making it difficult or even impossible to fit longer .357 cartridges. These rings are a ##### to remove – I had to use a stainless steel tornado brush. So if you are planning to alternate between .38 Spl and .357, it might be a pain in the ass.Yes...in fact my Ruger Security Six .357 states both .38 and .357 MAG in the manual. I don't use .38 SPL in my .357 because the shorter case length causes more crud to build up at the end of the chambers in the cylinder. I used to load .38 SPL loads into .357 cases, but since it costs next to nothing to reload, I just load magnum loads now.
