Hey all
New to the forms here. Just recently bought a ruger gen 3 6.5cm rifle. Wanted to get into long range shooting. My local range goes to 1000M. But would like possible longer if I am able too. But I'm looking for a scope for this wondering if anyone has recommendations?
I was interested in the Nikon fx1000. 6-24x. Or vortex, pst or hst scope.

Thanks in advance.

There's literally dozens to choose from.

To me the only way to pick is to find the best value with the features and budget you are looking for.

A PST is my vote. I shoot a 3-15 on my 6.5.

but I shoot a 1-8.5x on my 308 upper and 4.5-15 on my bolt 308.

i don’t shoot much past 1000 so I’m good, although I do like the Razor HD line with higher magnification.

I went with the Athlon midas tac 5-25x56 on my 6.5cm
https://www.gobigtactical.ca/online...Midas-TAC-5-25x56-APRS3-FFP-MIL-p155343438t's a 34mm tube instead of 30mm.
No illumination, I'm new to the long range game but figured the reality is everything I do will be during the day.

Got 45 rounds through it, I like it. This is my first scope above $600 so I cant give a real review of how good it is compared to others.
But I see allot of good reviews on them. Where as vortex seems like the reviews are everyone telling about their broken scope and how easy it was to fix it. No one seems to have a broken athlon.
They have the same Warranty.
But part of it may be there is allot more vortex sold I suspect.

never even considered an athlon line. ill look into them. also i heard nightforce is pretty similar?

Nightforce makes some of the best scopes out there.

Athlon has some good offerings in the budget category. I have a couple of them for my airguns, they have some nice features, nice glass for the price, good reticle choices, there's also a few things that drives me nuts about them. Arken is supposedly another good budget option.

Nightforce is in a completely different league then Athlon. Better features, higher quality, a lot more robust scope. If Arken was a Honda Civic, Nightforce would be a Maserati. But of course, that extra quality comes at more $$$, and up to you to determine whether a Honda or a Maserati better fits your budget.

I would probably pick Athlon over a budget Vortex. Or better yet, scout the EE and see if you can snipe a good deal on a better used scope.

Good advice right there!

awesome. thanks for the input. waiting for my access to the EE still :(

I think Id call the athlon a new honda ridgeline and the NF a new chevy 6.0 vortec 3/4 ton truck. One is made to take a beating, not that the other isnt nice on the highway.

A used NF would be a good option as well, youll get more features in a new athlon for the dollar though I think.

I like my gen 2 5-25 PST, glass is decent and only thing I'm not a fan of is that the eyebox is tight at high mag. Haven't compared it to similarly priced Athlons or Sightrons, but the glass is noticeably better to my eyes than the Burris XTR 2.

No idea if it's happening again this year, but if Bushnell is doing their 20-25% rebate sale again this spring that could put the Bushnell DMR 2 close to your budget. Last year Precision Optics gave us 15% off the top, to go with the 20% rebate from Bushnell, for a combined 32% off.
Upper level Bushies are pretty decent.

I myself will go to Athlon next. I have not seen many posts about any problems with them. You can find mixed reviews on the Nightforce SHV line. I actually like the SHV scopes, but the eye relief is poor, and zoom range is nothing special.
PST2 was to be my replacement but so may Vortex optics being sent back for repair, even the PST2's. I was hoping the Burris xtr3 would be priced reasonable, but its not.

In your price range , for 6 years now i've had 3 Sightrons , 6 x 24 LRMOA scopes on 3 rifles , a .338LM , .308 and .223 and have hammered the heck out of them with no issues . I put throw levers and tactical turrets on them along with zero stops . Contact Jerry at mysticprecision , a sponsor .

Be careful not to put a chandelier in the outhouse.

Lots of pricey scope recommendations here, and contrary to fan boy rhetoric, the RPR is just an OK rifle, and not something that would justify expensive glass. The exception to this is if your intentions are to go with something better down the line some time soon.

I would suggest that you put a hard limit around $1200, get a first focal plane scope with tactical turrets and parallax.... But pay attention to the reticle especially above the lateral line.

In order to see the bullet in flight, you don't want anything too heavy that would distract you from spotting trace. Everyone seems to be pushing Horus variants and it gets to be like looking through a screen door. It's a bloody shame when they do that to good glass.

I prefer good old MIL dots or maybe a slightly more articulated version with 1/2 MIL ticks.

You can go with the Athelon or PST since they are in the price range, but the reticle clutter will eventually get on your nerves. Especially since I just pointed it out.

Here's a link to a nicely done web site that helps you narrow down your search criteria. It's an American web site, but at least you can use it to search what you want, even if you cant buy it from there.

Nightforce is a completely different animal than Anthlon. They are the “go-to” scope for a lot of long range precision shooters. I would struggle justifying anything over roughly a grand on an RPR...it’s not a bad gun, but it’s not a great gun. Mounting a scope worth 2 or 3 times what the guns worth will help you see what your gun is missing, but not change the reality that your gun is missing those targets.
A Vortex razor is what I’m using on my RPR...I have more Vortex optics than anything else these days. They offer (to me at least) a great balance between quality and affordability. You can certainly get scopes 2 and 3 times the price of any given model, but you aren’t getting 2 or 3 times the scope; those extra couple thousand dollars are buying you perhaps 5% improvement in quality per thousand dollars, and I can’t justify it; I don’t own a ten thousand dollar rifle and never will. My RPR (same calibre, BTW) will never outshoot the Vortex; if the gun won’t shoot better than the optics will allow, to my thinking there is zero to be gained spending more money on optics. If your rifle is outperforming your optics, by all means, get something better/different, if not, use the extra $$$ on ammo or training
