I'd liike to get one in 308 but I don't want the 20" barrel. I asked Ruger by way of "letter to the president" about the reason for the short barrel on the 308 as compared to 243 and 6.5 and basically it was a decision based on the tactical group current fad and not based on extracting the most performance from the cartridge.
Likely it won't, the same as the Remington 5R milspec hasn't. Plus as already posted for the second hand market there is practically no market for second hand custom rifles. Hard to have something that is already bottomed out, bottom out more.
If the Ruger lives up to expectations it's poised to be another gateway rifle like the 5R. These rifles get you hooked.
It's got a lot to do with the fact that anyone serious about long range will not be running a .308.
The 4" less barrel really doesn't have much negative effect on a 308's overall long distance performance when viewed relative to the 6.5 or .243's long distance performance.
I think your definition of "serious about long range" is important. I think I am fairly serious but I do not compete in organized events and I am more than satisfied about the performance of my 308's. I am very satisfied with 308 performance in general in the right platform and the available bullets and premium ammunition make it more desirable to me than the other two caliber choices...but that's just me. Phil.
