I was wondering if ruger bolt action rifles come in a short and long action, or if they just put 308 into the same action as a 30-06? I'm also wondering if a tang safety is available on some models. (I have a 22-250 heavy bbl I was given, and it has a tang safety, not the "wing" type I saw in the store today). There's no use asking the salesman that, since they seem to know bugger all. Or "everything", depending on the individual. Advice please.

They come in both short and long actions.

No joy on the tang safety in a new rifle, as that was the original M77. The MarkII replaced it starting in about 1989, which features the side mounted wing safety.

3 position safety found on the new rugers is nice in the fact that it offers positive lockup when in the full safe position, and also allows cycling of the bolt in the middle position. It's a fairly simple, bombproof design that shouldn't ever cause a problem. ever.
