Does anyone have experience with the Rugger ranch Rifle/Mini-Thirty?

As a varmint type rifle, is the .223 which I think is like a 5.56x45 preferable over the 7.62x39 which is used in the Mini-Thirty version?

I know that the .223's high velocity gives it a flatter trajectory, but it does have less energy (approx. 1282 ft lbs vs 1552 ft lbs @ muzzle)

Are these rifles reliable and decent?

Ok...to address the questons as they were asked.

223 is generally more suited to varmints, and while it does have less energy at the muzzle, it actually surpasses it at 100 yds.
You dont need over 1000 lbs for varmints anyway

Mini's are great coyote guns out to 75-100 yds or so....but they are not tack drivers, they were never meant to be.

Depending on the "varmints" you are choosing, I would opt for a .17 HMR before a mini, for the same effective range the .17 costs less to shoot, and generally are extremely accurate.

Mini 14 / Mini 14 Ranch / Mini 30

Had versions of both... mediocre accuracy at best outta the box.

Moved on to bolt rifles for 'varmint' set-ups... ;)
