Ruger Rings?

I have just bought an older Model 77 in .338 Win Mag for my moose and elk rifle this fall. It comes with the Ruger rings, but I have heard mixed reviews on them, at best. Is the Ruger base the same as a Weaver base? I prefer Burris Signature Z-rings and would like to put a set on my new rifle if possible.

Thanks,
Mark

The Ruger receivers I have are all cut to use Ruger rings only. I'm not sure what negative press you may have read but for most of us they work just fine. A friend of mine had his Ruger 77 drilled and tapped for Weaver bases - I forget why he did that. I saw it and it looked fine - different too. Unless you go that way you must use Ruger rings or ones made to fit the Ruger receiver slots.

I think Leupold and Burris make Ruger style rings. Burris also has some kind of weaver adapters for large pistol use - here's a pic but I'd steer clear of it for your application;

Other than sometimes needing a lot of lapping, there isn't much wrong with Ruger's rings.

They even work fairly well as a QD set-up IME.

The things I have heard relate to the rings not being aligned properly and not fitting scope tubes very well, leaving marks on the scopes and inducing bending stresses. I guess I will wait until it gets here and see what I have. If Burris makes Zee rings to fit the Ruger base, that would be my first chocie.

Thanks,
Mark

Ruger rings work great and they are a nice bit of "value" added to yoru rifle.

They attach firmly to the machined slots, and are QR with a Twoonie!:)

Only real problem is that they often have a "burr" on the inner edge of them, that can be removed by some quick and easy lapping.

My new Ruger had rings that missed being aligned by about .1",Wholesale Sports made it all better with a different set of rings.
Although I'm not sure I convinced the counterman that .1" of ring gap is actually a problem.

The Ruger system is one of the best in terms of ruggedness. Plus they're included with the rifle. A nice bit of added value. I've never tried to QD my Ruger rings, but I'm waiting on a set of low rings so that I can mount my spare scope for my 416 Rigby. Gotta be prepared for disaster.

Ruger rings have held up fine on my .338 mag.
When I first bought it, I traded for a set of low rings to go with the compact 33 mm scope.
Soon realized it was too low, it didn't line up with my eye naturally, and cheek weld was squished.
Went back to medium rings and it all fits better, less slap to the face too.
Ring height shouldn't be only about how a scope looks.

I have the Burris Ruger to Weaver base on my M77, works well with the Leupold QR rings! Bought it from Mystic Precision on this board.

Most rings should be lapped including Leupold, Warne, Ruger and pretty much all others! It seems most folks including a lot of "gunsmiths" don't think rings need to be lapped. However, look at the amount of used scopes with ring marks on them! A lapping tool is relatively inexpensive and it only takes a few minutes work to get a PERFECT ring to scope fit.

About the only rings that lapping won't help are the ones with the plastic inserts (Burris Signature Zee for example).
