All,

I've been trying to locate a Ruger Scout Rifle but to no avail. There are plenty of other suitable rifles out there for hunting but I think this one covers all the bases. Anyone know where I might be able to locate one? Does anyone own one and have thoughts about it?

What cartridge do you want it in? Prophet River is showing them available in 450 Bushmaster.

Which, incidentally, is the correct cartridge for this rifle!

I like everything about these rifles except I'd lose the brake immediately, and I prefer a flush-fit magazine for hunting.

Savage makes a similar rifle, I've seen them around.

I haven't hunted since I was a teenager and I may go deer hunting at some point in the future. I was thinking .308 but again, I'm a relative newbie. I figured that calibre based on commonality/availability of ammunition? Any pluses regarding the 450?

I think they have been effectively discontinued or they just no longer export them to Canada.

I've been on the hunt for a new .308 Gunsite scout for over 2 years to no avail.

Thanks for digging that up! I've been going through it.

You're welcome. It'll keep you busy for awhile.
I have one in .308
Ammo availability, common components for reloading, a great do it all caliber.
I will never part with it.

Edit to add: You would probably get more interest if this would have been posted in the Hunting and Sporting Arms forum.

One of my favourite hunting companions. Short and light makes it a dream to carry through the thick Northern Ontario brush I regularly find myself in. Handling is great, cycles smooth enough once you get used to the Mauser style bolt. Polymer magpul mags help smooth out the bolt stroke over the metal mags which I found bind a bit more.

I run mine with the stock iron sights which are excellent. I normally get between 1 and 1.5 MOA out of it in this configuration. Once I figured out my holds was easily hitting steel out to 550 yards with it. I'd likely never take a shot thay far with it, but it proves it is more than capable for my intended use.

Hard to go wrong with one, try contacting Prophet River as they seem to be the only dealer that somewhat regular brings them in.

Keep your eye out on the EE. They pop up sometimes but guys are asking a premium for them. I absolutely LOVE mine. 6 deer and 1 moose taken with it. The XS rail and sights are a nice upgrade (imho). A LER scope is also a fun way to run it.

308 is certainly more of an all-round cartridge, but if you're like me you'll never take a hunting shot beyond the range 450BM can give you. And there are plenty of performance benefits for using the 450BM over the 308 at that range.

Plus, they're available right now, and who knows how long you'll have to wait for one in 308 to show up. If I were you (and assuming you can get ammunition or reloading components), I'd get one in 450BM right now to play around with. Then when one turns up in 308 you'll know for sure if you want it.

I've never fired that type of round before - it looks like a beast! I've only fired military ammunition, which is what I know. For me, it's unlikely I'd ever shoot anything beyond 100-200yds.

personally having owned one..... not worth the price.
there;'s one in the EE for 1600? stupid price LOL
When I bought mine new a handful of years ago it was 950.00 plus tax so not sure why the prices of these rifles jumped so high. Mine was a stainless Pepper laminate .308 purchased new from Wanstalls I believe.
I wanted .... and thought the ruger scout would be.... the perfect deer stalking and ambush rifle here on the BC coastal mountains.
The rifle was heavy for starters and overall that is why I ended up selling it.
By the time I put my sling and optic on, it was heavier than the rifle it was to replace..... a cut down sporterized lee enfield no1mkII
So I'm still hunting with that .303 and the ruger scout is way in my rear view.

I tried to like it because I am a fan of the M77 action and the safety on the bolt vs the tang. However the action was nothing like my other ruger M77 rifles and lacked the smoothness I am accustomed to.
When compared to a ruger american in a similar config..... the ruger scout is a way over priced kinda heavy and klunky rifle and currently wayyy over priced considering the other options availlable.

For a carbine .308 it was indeady heavy.
It was a 2 moa rifle ... which is ok for hunting... but bs for the price and weight.

Then mine blew up.

Im running .450 buhmaster. Fabulous round. It has decent ballistics and it really smacks hard.
You can reload it with .45 acp projectiles and lilgun shotgun powder...
Which is cheap compaired to other powers.

The savage rifle is avalible and better accuarcy.

Compact and handy, I'm a fan of mine for sure. :)

No issues having the scope directly over the ejection port? This was one of the things I was wondering about with this rifle - the rail seems to be much further ahead than most other rifles?
