I have a Ruger handgun:
Stainless Steel
4-inch barrel
Security-Six: .357 Magnum.
Double Action Revolver

I would like to change the barrel to 6-inches so as to have the firearm reclassified from "prohibited" to "restricted".

I have tried contacting a few gunsmiths, but have not been able to find anyone that will/can do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

"...have not been able to find anyone..." If you don't have the 6" barrel, not being able to find one is very likely the problem. Your revolver hasn't been made since 1988. No new barrels are available. Nor are used barrels readily available. Unless you can find a barrel, you're toast.

I had this very swap done about 6 years ago to retain a 4" blued Security Six that was my father's. I couldn't retain it as it was 12(6), which I don't have. The work was done by the Ruger authorized warranty center somewhere in Alberta (the work was arranged through my local shop, I'm not sure exactly who did the work).

Ruger would only sell a barrel to their authorized warranty center for install by their smith. In my case, no blued 6" barrel was available, but a stainless was. I had it installed and black teflon coated to match the gun as close as possible, as the stainless wouldn't take blue.

The work took about 14 months to receive the gun back, and cost about $275 after taxes. There was some waiting time to source the barrel from Ruger, and then the shop was so busy it took a while for them to complete the work as well.

If it wasn't my dad's gun, I wouldn't have gone through the hassle, for a legal 12(6). I'd simply sell it and buy a similar one in the longer barrel. If I had 12(6) status, I'd leave the gun alone.
