I think they are a nice looking rifle, I've always been a fan of Ruger myself.
I don't like the suggested retail price. thoughts?

Yes a very nice rifle indeed. However, It would be nice if they made a Economy model without the rails and backup sights. Thats just me. Keeping it Simple. One question is possed, will they have other calibres? And when will Canada see them, and how much? But thats like asking also what will the dollar be like in 1 year compared to our friends to the south.

The price is somewhat justified I feel.

A regular Direct Gas Impingement (DGI) AR-15 with a quad rail with continuous top rail, folding backup sights, a better pistol grip and three PMags and then add a gas piston system can cost over $2000 USD. So it's not completely out of line for pricing.

Not sure if we will see them in Canada... yet. Ruger apparently isn't shipping the SR-22 (a 10/22 with a Nordic kit) into Canada supposedly because of U.S. State Department restrictions because of the collapsible buttstock and flash hider. If that's the case they won't bring the SR-556 either. I'm sure they could ship them if they wanted to but considering the size of the market in Canada versus the U.S. they might not want to deal with it.

They also apparently have some issues with case extraction. One member posted about it and then others claimed to also to have the same problem after a few magazines and as low as 60 rounds. Links above.

For the money though IMO I would get a IWI Tavor or RobArms XCR.

Anyway, I guess this settles it. Here's my note to Ruger and their response:

"Thank you for using the Ruger On-Line Customer Support Request Form.

This e-mail is in response to your question or comment of 10/05/2009
Request No: 41659

Comment / question:

Will the new Ruger SR 22 be available in Canada?

Response:
We are sorry to advise that: Because of the military-style features of this rifle (telescoping stock, flash suppressor, etc), the US State Dept. will not approve export licenses for commercial sales in Canada. They will consider export licenses for Law Enforcement, Police & Government Agencies only.

We know this is disappointing to all, but it is the current US policy on exports of firearms with these features.

All those foreign terrorists will be wailing in agony that they can't get 10/22s with Nordic stocks. And everybody else, of course, will feel a lot safer.

Some U.S. gun laws are dumber than ours. It's almost unbelievable.

If they won't ship the SR-22 for it's military features, the SR-556 will have the same fate for now.

On second look, I suppose the 2000$ tag is deserved... It is a direct gas and is decked out with TROY features. Damn it's ###y.

It's a piston gun not DI,

That is definitely worth the tag, it's decked out from factory, flip sights, quad rail, hogue grip, Pmags, adjustable stock, rail covers, chrome lined this, chrome plated that, and its a piston gun.... Definitely justified...

The piston push rod cannot be removed for maintenance unless the gas block is removed.

It is rather stupid if you ask me.

As much as I like AR-15's, I think if you want a gas piston firearm, get one that was designed to be a gas piston firearm to begin with.

Thanks to Armedsask about mentioning a legal SR-22 coming in. I didn't know that yet, can you point me to your source? I'll just have to change the buttstock to a collapsible one...

While I'm not crazy for the SR-556, I do think having more choice is always a good thing. Product competition generally also creates better products and sometimes lower prices. All of which generally benefit the consumer.

Hey wait didn't Mr. Ruger testify in front of congress that no one needed more than 10 rounds in a mag?! I guess they "retired" him gently and behind the scenes the CEO told him to STFU!

I wonder if this new MA approved model will now be exportable to Kanada? Feedback anyone???

I would rather have the MR223 or the LWRCI M6 series, if I really really really want a piston system.

I would rather save the difference of roughly $2K between the HK and/or LWRCI & Ruger and put it towards some decent optics and/or accessories/ammo.

I mean this is still just a semi-auto and I personally think the price difference for the HK and LWRCI is overkill for a semi-auto in Kanada.

According to the Ruger factory representative responsible for all exports, no version of the current SR556 meets the State Departments rules for export, do not shoot the messenger this was discussed at the distributor FN Sporting/RNicholls dealer show several weeks ago.
