Ruger SR9 and parallel thumb forward (IPSC) grip?

Hi all,

I'm really interested in the Ruger SR9 (great fit and feel in my hands) although i have a few questions in regards to different hand grips in relation to the slide stop/release.

I like to use a parallel thumb forward grip (similar to an IPSC grip) where my strong hand thumb rests on top of my weak hand thumb while pointing parallel with the slide. I have always used this grip with 1911's, and never have an issue, although recently after shooting Sig Sauer's i have noticed that the slide would not lock back after the last round. At first i thought it was the ammunition i was using, but after the 2nd and 3rd occurrence in a row i realized that my grip style was causing me to ride the slide release on the Sig. Apparently the grip i am so used to i cannot use on Sig's and im forced to change my grip to a less favoured one.
My hope is that this does not happen with the Ruger SR9! Anyone out there have a similar problem with Sig Sauer's? and if so, have you also shot the SR9 with the same grip? Any problems arise? Any Ruger SR9 owners use a parallel thumb grip with no issues? Anyone shoot an SR9 and run into slide catch issues with thumbs riding them?

Any input, info, advice etc. would be much appreciated.

I had the same issue with my Sig as you just described. I adjusted my grip so that my gripping hand's thumb rests on the back of the supporting hand's thumb. It felt weird at first, but only for a few mags. I could have gotten rid of the Sig over having to adjust my grip, but I enjoy ALL guns too much to let one brand's idiosyncrasies with a particular model turn me off that model.
 
the slide release is pretty minimal on the SR9. I've not had that issue with it, but depending on your hand shape your mileage may vary. A minor grip adjustment will usually make the problem if any, go away.
 
you just move your thumb over to on your weak hand instead of tight against the gun like a 1911. 1911s are really the only gun that the tight against grip works with. I have a sig and 1911, just have to modify my grip a bit when I shoot the sig
 
I've had the same thing on my Sig 226 but not my SR9 if memory serves. Had it happen a few times with my Glocks too now that I think about it, you should be alright with the Ruger though.
 
It happened to me with the sig and hk too.
I changed my grip to a crush grip, but it was not that comfortable
