I was just wondering what everyone thought about the Ruger SR9? I am considering buying one and most of the reviews I have read seemed pretty good, but I thought I would see what everyone on here thought.

It's a decent gun for the money, but I prefer other plastic guns like Glock, M&P, FNP, CZ P07...

Why do you prefer the others?

I haven't had a chance to shoot the SR9 yet but just handling it I'd say it seems like a great gun for the money!

We're all built a bit different though and until I actually shoot it I won't know for sure but I like what I see and feel so far.

This just my two cents but I can't see why anybody would buy an entry level pistol like the SR9 over the range kit... it's just the pure economic of it...

Unless you just really don't like the m&p platform.

I bought an SR9 as my first gun simply because after holding a glock, sig, and XD they felt awkward. The SR9 felt better in my hand because it was a lot slimmer. However, if you have larger hands you may find the gun to be to small and it may pinch your hand on the slide. I have about 300 rounds through my SR9 and not a single FTF. Out of the box my sites were way off, but other than that I have no regrets buying it.

I tend to agree with this (except the CZ P-07 part) to say for the price (~$450 new these days, I think), it is a good value but I also prefer the more "tried" platforms like Glock or M&P.

To provide a bit more rationale (my opinion):
Pros
-low price
-love the feel of the grip. The most 1911ish of all the polymer guns and slim which is good for carnies with tiny hands like me
-adequate trigger
-I love having manual safeties
-low bore axis
-fairly good reliability (first hand experience from working at a rental range)... got nothing on Glock (what does?) but is better than SIG or CZ from what I have seen with my own two eyes

Cons
-stock sights suck, way too small and I don't know what's currently available aftermarket
-speaking of which, I think accessories and parts are still a bit hard to come by... definitely nothing like Glock or even M&P/XD level

If you really only have ~$450 +tax to spend and not a penny more or if you are just looking to expand your collection, I would recommend the SR9... though my real answer is to save up a little bit (maybe skip a few meals or skip a night at the bar :D) and get something else.

I had one and I don't agree with the term entry level. I like it better than the M&P but not as good as the G17 that I have. Anyway it was the most comfortable handgun that I have owned. kinda a little regret to sell it but I need money for another toy.

I chime in evry time this topic comes up. GREAT gun for the money and even at $100 bucks more it would be worth it. Excellent if you have smaller hands, has adjustable sights from the factory. The only thing that I dont like about it is the grip feel, its a little smooth, but for 9 bucks, you get a slip on #3 Pachymar grip sleeve and that COMPLETELY solves it. Go get one, you wont regret it

I had SR9 and it was alright. But it just doesn't look like a well though out gun IMO. Rear sight should be farther back and front sight closer to the front. Also didn't really care for the sight picture.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help. I am still going to think about it, but I think I may just wait a little longer, save a bit more and buy the G17. It is definitely a nice pistol and I like the feel of it a bit more.
