hey guys, so i took my 7.5 super blackhawk .44 out to the range the other day to test out my new ivory grips. I was firing standard factory .44 mag out of it, then I tried some winchester .44 special cowboy loads in it. I searched around on the web before hand to make sure this was okay and it seemed all good.

The problem i was running inot was that the cylinder was not cycling all the way when i shot these and the timing seemed to be out.

Then went back to .44 mag and all was good.

any insight on this matter ?

cheers, Mclean

this all out of the box thinking and i am short on sleep so .......

your mag loads were they jacketed or lead??

because the special round is shorter--> i do not think round was too long

was gun dirty ?? a bit of dirt that fell out when you switched back to mag loads

did the cowboy loads act up on the first round fired or was it several cylinders?

What i think happened is
that the cylinder gap on your gun is tight (which is good )
when you switched to the cowboy loads (which are real soft lead)
(i think swaged-- not even cast with a very low bhn # 5to 8 bhn

after a couple of cylinders lead fowling formed where the cylinder to barrel gap is and slowed down the cylinder

and when you switched back to the mag loads that after a cylinder or two cleaned up the gap and stopped the dragging

you might not have the problem with cast cowboy loads

let us know what you find out:D

Weight of the loaded cylinder is different with the mag loads vs. the specials.

I have heard of issues with antique revolvers not locking up right when they are unloaded, but the added weight of the cartridges makes them function fine.

Not sure if it is a timing issue or what would fix it, but you should be heading to a gunsmith who knows revolvers.
