in wood with the forend insert ... is it still being made by ruger. it lists on their website but no one seems to be showing it in their catalogues.
i have been thinking one in 257 roberts would be a great deer rifle. but i'm not that familiar with the 257 bob other than reputation. i am a wimp WRT recoil. thought this might be a nice rig.
 
If you don't like recoil, don't go ultralight. ;) Can't say if they're any imported here, but the ultralight's a great gun, yes. Love that action. As for .25 cal, .260 Rem covers all the roles better, not sure if it's available in that model though, didn't used to be though they're offering it in the compact, so it may be. .25 cal bullets are only so-so...
 
the Ruger UltraLight isnt a overly light rifle, and the 257 Roberts isnt a hard kicker even in light rifles, so I dont think you have anything to worry about. If you handload, you can load it down to a lower speed and reduce recoil even more. If you dont handload, the only load worth shooting is the Hornady 117 gr BTSP

I have one of those with the pencil barrel,no kick at all.DAN>>>:D
 
hornhead, I bought a Ruger MKII standard rifle this past July chambered for the Roberts. It is a great rifle. A little trigger work and relieved the forend pressure and it makes itty bitty groups. It just loves 100 grain bullets.
As for recoil there is nothing to speak of. I also have a BLR also in 257 Roberts and I took my first deer this past season. It is a great cartridge but to get the most out of it you will have to reload. My Ruger weighs a tad over 8# with a 6X scope and the BLR a tad under with a 4X scope. The Velocity difference between the two barrel lengths is between 80 to 100fps depending on the load. If you’re looking for a classic dual purpose cartridge the bob is a good one.

The Roberts is a great deer round, and won't kick excessively in the ultra light. Sweet little rifle, by the way. In honesty I would like it better if it came with a 22" barrel.

Regarding factory loads, by far the best for deer is the 120 grain Nosler Partition Federal Premium load. It gave 2800 fps in both rifles I tried it in. Good round.
