I have 2 5.5" s/s consecutive serial #ed, hunter laminate gripped Ruger Bisley Vaquero's in 45 colt that I use for cowboy action shooting as well as I sometimes use them as my remote area carry handguns. (I have an ATC remote area carry license)
After having a talk with John Linebaugh I have gone all the way to 1300fps with 330gr Jae-Bok Young WFNGC's. I have done a few mods to the guns like a spin pawl that allows the cylinder to turn either direction for easier faster reloading and I had a fellow from the gun club take them apart and smooth out any rough spots. When shooting cas I want a lighter trigger pull so I do what is called a "Poor Boys Trigger Job" which is basically remove one side panel of the grip and pop one arm of the trigger spring off which lightens the trigger pull a lot. When I use the guns for remote area carry I reinstall the trigger spin due to wanting the heavier trigger for defense.
My guns are extremely accurate as well... If I do my part I can an 8" X 10" everytime at 100 yards... I just don't always do my part though....
I find the balance of the 5.5" barreled Vaquero's to be the best and if you try one of the New Vaquero's I find the 4 5/8" barrels balance the best. Just remember to never fire a heavy load in the New Vaquero because thay can't take it.....
I have an older Vaquero, 45LC, 5 1/2". It is a 'fun thing' to shoot. I had intended to give 'cowboy' shooting a try but haven't got around to it, yet. As with most Rugers it is very durable & dependable. I would prefer a 4 5/8".
I also have an older one is .45 Colt. I love it and I shoot it more than anything else I own! I don't shoot magnum loads in it but it is nice to know that in the event of a double charge of a light load at least it would hold together. Hell I just love the look even if it has a .44 size frame.
In addition to the Vequaro I have an old Ruger Flat top .44 Mag. Light gun with heavy loads, it can be 'fun'. It also has a set of factory Ruger Stag Horn grips.
I have a new Vaquero and have had the older larger bulkier one and I must say that the fit and feel of the new feels better in my hand. It is 5 1/2" and shoots to point of aim at 15Yds and not much different at 25. No it won't take the loads my other one would handle but I don't need a magnum type load. I was very pleased with my groups the other day and can't wait to work up a load for the new vaquero. Handsome arm. I have two boxes of the heavier load made up so I guess I will get the old bullet puller out to reduce the charge. I must say that the smaller dimensions make it feel more balanced
and not so much top heavy like the older one, but this is only how it fits me.
Try it, if you don't like it well we have the board to horse trade cause this is what we do lol !!!
