I was looking through Ruger's site last evening and came across a new product . It's a stainless 4 5/8" barreled Vaquero in .45 Colt . What a beautiful shootin' iron . I reload .45 Colt for my Marlin Cowboy and was wondering about the strength , structural integrity of the Vaquero compared to a Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk . Don't know if it's the same frame or the same size so i'm unsure of fullhouse loads in the Vaquero . I'm using 300 grain bullets stiffly loaded for the Marlin and a buddy is using 300 grainers loaded stiffly in .44 mag in his Blackhawk but i don't know if a Vaquero will take the same medicine that a Blackhawk will . I'm not a cowboy shooter and not interested in softball loads .

The older model Vaqueros were built on the larger stainless frame and they were offered in 44mag. Ruger does not offer 44mag on the "new" Vaquero frame. I wouldn't be comfortable loading hot .45Colt in the new Vaquero frame.

I have the old Vaquero in 4/58 stainless in 45LC

This is the only frame I would shoot 45LC out of. The new one is closer to the orginal colt style but not as robust in my book.

The ruger is heavy , and can handle what I put into it. The beretta is well balanced and light. Like em both , the Vaquero now has fake ivory grips which are fuller than the wood, improved balance a bunch.
The Stampede has a nice grip with the plastic . The ''long colt'' is a classic.Would like to try some BP loads , I know there may be no going back.:D
But gotta have some bear stoper loads:D

atr... If you want to shoot heavy loads get yourself a used "Old Vaquero" which is larger and more robust than the "New Vaquero" which was designed smaller to satisfy the Cowboy Action crowd.... for more information on this subject do a search on www.sixgunner.com ....mic

If yer hunting Bear, get a rifle. Otherwise the graveyards are full of folks who got on the wrong end of a 44-40 or a .45 Long Colt.
Here lies Lester Moore
4 slugs from a .44
No Less
No More

If you are really into pain, then there is always the .50A&E which should stop a bear or even a lost cape buffalo.

John it is for arms length bear medicine and with the 300 grainer Beartooth , gas checked hardcast i can load quite a bit more jam in .45 Colt than .44 mag but it's looling like that pretty , stainless Vaqueo may not be up to it .

I have a 4 5/8" Stainless "Old" Vaquero. The "Old" Vaquero's are basically fixed sighted New Blackhawk's. These guns will take very heavy .45 Colt loads. These loads will K/B a SAA or a "New" Vaquero. The " New" Vaquero"s use the old .357 only Blackhawk frame. DO NOT LOAD these to the "Ruger Only" load levels in most of the modern manuals. They were built to accommodate SASS (Cowboy) shooters.
