I would like to ask any CGNers that own either or both what their opinion is about the revolvers made by these two.

I am considering revolvers in .357, .22, 9mm mainly and 6" barrells, but will consider others.

I am looking for something versatile, reliable and accuarate.

Ruger has the convertible model which is offered with 2 cylinders in .357 and 9mm. Also, the Ruger single six comes in .22LR and .22WM.

On the other hand is S&W 686 that everybody talks about.

Thanks

I'm a definite fan of S&W revolvers. I don't think you can go wrong with a Model 686 in .357 Magnum. A good all round double action wheelgun! I'm not so hot about S&W semi-autos, however.

Ruger makes a good solid revolver. The convertible models are on the single action frame, though. Their double action wheelguns are also well made and durable. I'm not hot about Ruger centerfire semi-autos, either. But those that do have them seem to feel they are good value for the money. Ruger makes a nice .22 lr pistol, however in a couple of variations.

Personally, I have a few S&W double actions revolvers and two Ruger .22 semi-autos...

That's my .02.........

Yikes, I have both convertible Rugers and 9 S&W revolvers, they all feel and work differently. Some have traits that I prefer in different roles, try them all and pick the one that works for you:)

Like it has been said above, fit is important. Find a retailer that has both the S&W and a Ruger and see which feels better to you. Aftermarket grips are available for both(Hogue) which are even more comfortable, but you will not go wrong with either a S&W 586/686 or a Ruger GP100. It becomes a matter of personal preference as both are true performers.:D
Good luck
Cheers

While I have three Ruger revolvers I have eight Smith & Wesson revolvers. Therefore the popular vote says go for the S&W.

But take into consideration that that advice came from someone who owns three P38s (and I'm not sure why).

If I can have only one handgun, it would be the S&W 686. IMO 357 mag is the most fun cal that every gunnutz should have one. Ruger GP100 is cool looking too however the trigger is not that great right out of the box but they are also not in the same price range.

And on the eighth day, God created Mesirs Smith and Wesson and said "Go forth and make the best Damn revolvers ever created!" And they did that and the rest is history. nuff said

Have owned S&W Models 15, 28(4" and 6"), and 66. Also had the .22 version of the Model 36. (Can't remember the model number.) Currently have a Model 25. I have shot scores of Model 10's and 36's.

Excellent guns, well made and accurate. The DA pull on a Smith is, in my opinion, the best out of the box on a revolver, and the SA pulls are always crisp. (I have an early Colt '357' which has an action like polished glass, and I still prefer an out of the box Smith.)

Haven't had much experience with Ruger DA revolvers, but I am sure that they are well made, strong and reliable. The specimens I have handled had heavy DA pulls.

Had a old model Vaquero which had a single action trigger pull like a Bullworker Hand exerciser, and was built like a tank. Hated it.

It's your money, handle them and you'll find which you prefer. If it was my money I'd check out the Ruger, but still buy the Smith !
