ruined scope from a shooting bench?

Ok, so ive done some searching but havent found much help, i have a remington 770 with a bushnell scope that came with it as a combo and the setup was quite impressive, under 3/4" at 100 yards consistantly but while trying to troubleshoot another rifle thats accuracy recently went from 3/4 @100 yards to 4" @ 100 yards, the 770 wouldnt group. we wanted to get a base so we used a gun vice with a butt stop on the back to shoot 3 rounds outta each gun then trade scopes and well..now the 770 that was shooting great groups is now at about 3 inches at 60 yards... So my question is, is it posible the recoil killed my scope with the gun not having any backwards movement? does this happen?
 
Absolutely possible the recoil killed the scope. Vice or no vice, it happens. But the stop didn't help.

When you prevent the rearward movement of the gun, you are elastically storing that energy in the butt pad, stock and whatever is stopping it. The elastic part kicks in then and pushes the gun forward. Many scopes can't handle the forward jolt very well since it's unusual. Hopefully the scope is still under warranty?
 
i sure hope it is, the gun/scope combo is about 3 weeks old, lol it's a cheap bushnell...i guess i gotta send it off, im gona replace the scope with something newer, maybe a leaupold or possibly an elite 4200 but ive had 3 bushnells fail on me now, i hate to put more trust in them, thanks for the fast reply
 
you get what you pay for with scopes. Those package scopes are pretty much 50 dollar "throw away scopes" that they include to sucker people in with a "turn-key operation". They might last you a year or 2 on a rimfire, but on a big centerfire, you usually don't get past the first box of ammo you buy with the gun.
Get a leupold, Burris, Bushnell Elite 3200/4200, redfield, etc. There are lots of affordable scopes to get for your gun. But, if you don't budget at least 200 bucks for a scope, you will get a failure of your cheap scope right before you pull the trigger on that 14 point monster buck.
I appreciate shooting within a budget, but if you don't can't afford a decent scope to put on the gun, you should get a gun with good open sights. Its not fair to the animal, to hunt with anything less than a minimal, reasonably clear/sturdy scope.
I tried to cheap out on crappy scopes for a few years in the hope of getting the one out 10 budget scopes that holds zero on magnum rifles. IT just doesn't happen. Now I don't buy the rifle until I can put good glass on it. If not, then I wait until I have the money.
And remember, extra money isn't that hard to get with ebay around. They say that everyone has at least 1100 bucks in useless items they could be selling , just lying around the house,

im looking into the elite 3200 or 4200 as well as the leaupold vx1 and vx2..are these gonna be worth the money? im planning on getting the best scope i can for under 375 bucks, thats what i have budgeted for it
 
ok well bass pro at cross irons got a sale coming up,ill see what i can find, is either better then the other? bushnell elite/ leapold?
 
Do a search of the optics EE and you will see new & used B&L Elite 3200 for $200 +/- and no taxes....you cant beat a 3200 for the price.
Leupolds are great, but, 2x's more $$. So if you are on a budget get a 3200

Sgt Rock hit the nail on the head with regards to scopes, as did the bigslide regards to recoil....want to break your rifle stock? Put the butt up against a wall and pull the trigger and watch what happens....the rifle has to be able to move backwards otherwise something is gonna break...

Possible that you re-installed the scope wrong when you swapped them over? Rings not tight enough or something?
 
never even got to transfer the scope Dax, i see that there is going to be leaupold scopes on sale at bass pro for 179 a piece, might have to check them out, cant see what the model is though....im gonna look at the bushnells as well, just been burned by bushnell more then once now...thanks everyone
 
what does everyone think of the bushnell trophy scopes? are they comparable to the elites or is the elite the way to go? the leupold scopes are 239 sorry, got it mixed with an american store

I would buy a new Redfield over a trophy or legend. If you have more to spend, look at Leupold VXI or VXII. Also, you can find good prices on Burris Fullfield II.
 
In the last 2 weeks my kids have wrecked 2 Bushnell rimfire scopes just from shooting.
If I had the money I would get them VX I or VXII s,
so after looking around I think I will be getting all three of them

I recently bought a Redfield 3-9 Revolution and I love it. Super clear glass and made in the Leupold factory. I also have a Burris Fullfield II with the balistic plex reticle. Its super clear, rugged, and the reticle works as advertised. My Leupold VXI 3-9x40 is great too. I've owned 3200's and 4200's and they are fine also. If you get the chance, try them all out. Be prepared to spend between 200 and 300 for any of these. Just get the one that looks clearest and happens to be cheapest at the time. (of course, the leupolds and redfield's have a bulletproof warranty, with possibly faster service, so if they happen to be only 30-50 bucks more than the Bushnells or Burris, then I'd opt for the Leupolds for the extra money. I'd stay away from the Leupold Riflemen scopes (which are probably gonna be the ones on sale for 179 that you mentioned.) As these are just average compared to a bushnell and they have a 1/2 minute adjustments on the reticle, not the more common 1/4" per click. This give a slightly cruder fine tuning.
Just my experience, as I have TONS of it in the midrange scope department.
 
I wouldn't touch a Burris, a Simmons, or any cheap Bushnell, and probably not the low end Leupold either unless that is all i could afford.
Leupold has a GREAT warranty. The VX-I and VX-II are damn good.
The Bushnell elite 3200 is the clearest scope $200 will buy you. And will last you a long time.
Dont buy a cheap scope. It will just make you mad

It is more common for stocks to be damaged when used in a gun vice that doesn't allow the gun to recoil.
