What’s the law on going driving down to the states for a trip, buying ammunition then bringing it back to Canada. I’ve read you can bring up to 5000 rounds back. But others say there are laws against exporting from the USA?

Canadian customs upon re-entry is nobissie.
Just pay taxes.

Leaving the USA is a gamble.
If you get caught in a random exit search your facing some big smuggling trouble.

The correct answer is: You may export but you need to apply for an export permit through BIS to be compliant by US law as their is no Low Value Exemption for ammunition

There is an American law known as ITAR, look it up. While it is true that you can bring back such things as ammunition under Canadian law, and Canada Customs will tell you that, it is NOT legal for you to do so under American law and if perchance you get searched on your way back, you will be in serious trouble. You may be wondering how that could happen, well I used to love going down there on day trips and various camping, fishing and mountaineering trips and even in those friendly days every once in a while our American friends would have screening set up on the road before you enter Canada, looking for who knows what, but they were there. These days there's also a chance that you will be stopped while still down in the States where they're screening cars for illegal migrants, that's been true ever since 9-11, and quite recently there emerged this bizarre story about a pair of women folksingers whose car was stopped by the Ohio State Police and searched, the troopers also asking what their views were of the USA.

I think I understand America and Americans very well and I have discontinued even visiting there.

Depending on the state, you may encounter difficultly purchasing ammunition. NY for example, requires all ammunition sales to go through an FFL dealer, even online transactions must be shipped to one for a background check at point of sale. Other border states require state id for purchase and i do not know of a single online retailer that will ship to a PO box. Then of course, each state has a raft of legislation regarding firearm/ammo possession, some making Canada's gun laws seem tame and pale by comparison. At this point, with the CDN dollar being so weak, prices, except for bulk ammo, are on par, if not more expensive than what you can find in Canada... In short, "The juice ain't worth the squeeze".
