Russian 1948 dated 9mm METAK

I stumbled upon this interesting and uncommon box of Russian 1948 dated 9mm pistol ammo.

Does anyone know more about this box of ammo, or why the Russians were making 9mm during this era? I'm not too familiar with Russian surplus ammo, what do they mean by METAK?

By METAK, do they mean metal jacket or metal core?

Metak simply means "bullet", I believe, or cartridge.

A lot of it got sold.
It is corrosive, of course, and has hard primers for smg use. You might experience misfires.
