The Russians, captured millions upon millions of rounds of 8x57. They emptied all of the warehouses of every country they occupied.
When they were dumping the Mausers in the Far East, Africa and Korea, they also supplied them with the ammuntion. Most of it just got used up.
There was a bunch that came into Lever Arms during the late sixties. Beautiful stuff. All bright and shiney and it was supposedly made in one of the satelite countries after the war. It wasn't Yugo stuff though.
Many of the CCCP countries were still using K98s into the late fifties. That's how long it took to get enough SKSs made up.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Russians produced the 8x57 round. They took all of the equipment to make it back to Russia, after the war.
There were several satelite countries that produced it as well. Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Poland etc. Even Greece made up a bunch of it.
The Greek stuff was incredible. Say what you like about the Greeks, just don't say they make poor ammunition.
