Izhmash subsidiary Molot to manufacturer Russian AR-15 rifle!

In a Russian AK manufacturer Molot, who are a subsidiary of AK-74/AK-1xx maker Izhmash and who make the VEPR AK-style rifles, announced at the Moscow ARMS & Hunting '11 expo that they would be producing an AR-15 style rifle called the HPE-140 (впо-140). The rifle is in a M4 configuration and includes a quad rail, ergonomic pistol grip and muzzle brake. It weighs ~7 lbs.

I never thought I would see the day that a subsidiary of Izhmash would produce an AR-15. It is a pity Eugene Stoner did not live to the worldwide popularity of his invention.

Wow... ARs made in Russia.
I hope this won't compete too much with NEA for international exports.

they can start by moving that carry handle one notch forward.

Seriously, i wouldnt expect anything good from this venture..

you guys rail on norinco like they never make a correct product... well the Izhmash boys will make Team Norinco look like the Rolex of knockoff firearm manufacturers

they cant even make their own firearms properly, let alone copy someone elses.

The fit and finish on the Saiga and Molot stuff is godawful, and those are supposed to be a step up from the military versions.. the saiga stuff shoots alright though, thats its saving grace.

Well, you know how it is with pastures and fences... We'll just have to learn it the hard way, I suppose. Or rather, the early adapters will learn the hard way, and the rest of us will find out the easier way: through other people :D

Id like to know what you base them not making there own arms properly? Ive owned and shot many modern arms from russia and there reliability beats most and there accuracy is on par with whats needed for the job. Ill take an AK74 over an AR anyday... but I wont bad mouth Ar manufacturers simply because i prefer the competition.

I think its good to hear that Russia has decided to take on the AR.. its an interesting prospect and im sure there are alot of civis over in that direction that would get a kick out of it.

I'd probably consider buying one if they're in the Norinco/NEA price range.

Even if it doesn't shoot very well, you should still be able to use it as a bottle opener/sledgehammer/deep fryer. :D

-numerous Saiga and Molot returns for faults
-AK's with bent barrels from the factory
-front sight posts canted so far that you couldnt even use the protective blade for sighting
-consistently poor fit and finish

and thats just my experiences.. i know Beavis here on the board had a Saiga AK in .223 which had a canted from sight , i think he ended up chopping it off and threading on a suppressor
I still love them, and the Molot Vepr 12ga shotgun has still been my favourite firearm of all time.. but they are ridiculously lax on QC

cant complain about the accuracy side though, that always impresses

Hmmm; how many Russian firearms the world over?

My experiences have been much of the like of Tex...none bad.

From AK to SVD and the spectrum between, they've all been what I come to expect...operational and reliable.

Yeah, they may not be the girl that wins the "Queen of the County Fair" and sits atop the hay wagon but they're the "go to" girls you take behind the bleachers. :D

Suprised it took so long for the Russians to produce an AR knockoff. Most (first world) countries have their own versions as well as there are many many AK knockoffs worldwide.

Likewise, I'll be reserving my judgement of this AR until I've read a few range reports.

Yup mine shoots about half a metre to the right at 50m with the open sights. I put a cheap UTG style quick release mount on which made me able to hit a service rifle target at 200m, so I was happy that my rifle went from a useless POS to a useful stop gap till I got my AR. The spring in the good-for-nothing bolt hold open latch came out with use, so every now and then it would pop up while I was shooting and cause a frustrating FTF. So much for AK reliability. I never bothered with the suppressor after seeing how it grouped or rather patterned. Meh someone wants to buy it so I'll get my money back.

In response to the Rusky AR's, I'm actually keen to see what they're like. Wonder where it sits on the chart? :D

Look forward to seeing the Russians improve the concept considerably. Wouldn't be surprised if QC improves considerably now that Izhmash has taken over Molot.

They could start with a carrying handle you can actually get a well-gloved hand through and an enlarged or removable trigger guard for the same reasons.

As for the horse-shoe file handguard, I presume gloves are required!:D

A cocking handle on the left side of the handguard would be a good start as well; otherwise only southpaws can #### the rifle without taking their hand off the pistol grip & trigger. Brilliant design that!

A decent muzzle brake like the AK74 design would be a good thing too.

I'm pretty sure you can get ambidextrous charging handles. My AR has an ambi mag release and you can also get an ambi bolt release and selector. I fail to see how the Russians could improve on the design, other than make another ITAR exempt AR, which is an improvement in my books.

these have all been 2007-2010 manufactured firearms .. and mainly all Izhmash.. the Molot stuff is of higher quality.. but not by much
