Hello fellow gun nuts. I just love the k98 mauser. 7.92mm rocks. Finally got a real decent RC from Milarm. Anyhow I wanted to start this thread on RC's with a Canadian (any nationality also) but mostly a Canadian perspective on these old battle horses. Once I figure out how to post some pics of my k98, I will be able to put my questions out there. But for now what is the general thought of these rifles? Personally I think they are full of military history, the fact that they were captured does not bother me at all, someone had to loose. I am just glad that after 60 years we collectors have access to one of the best service rifles ever made.

Good choice on the purchase!! Some RC's are great shooters, just as good as matched examples. You may want to get into reloading if you are aren't already as surplus 8mm is a little hard to find up here. Also, more accurate ammo is never a bad thing...

I am a Mauserphile, I make no bones about it. ###y, accurate rifles, what's not to love!

How about the s**tty sights?:)

Built for 20 year old men with super human eyes fighting for glory and defense of the Reich...

OK being a little facetious - I think the sights are good enough to hit a human size target at typical engagement ranges. 7.92x57 is a wonderful round and the Karibaner is probably the closest thing to a hunting rifle ever used by any army. RC's will never hold a candle to an all-matching, pre-war K98k but make great shooters. They can't all be safe queens. You've gotta have fun with them too!

ive got a pourt contract 98k a yc98k (42/1940) and a 1937 s/147 rc98k in a semi krieg stock. i dont shoot the pourt one very much .mt yc98k is much nicer than the rc but its had most stamps removed.my rc has all inspection stamps intact its been fun looking them up to see where they were made.its rifling at the muzzle is tired but i may counter bore it well see.i think the best powder for all bullet weights is varget. at our gun range campbell river weve got a scuba tank upside down on a piece of reebar i can hit it id say 75% of the time with the open sights i think thats good enough

My grandfather (Captain in the German Army) told me that the Russians tended to shoot back. That lowers your hit percentage a bit :)

Not an issue in a war zone but the only thing that drives me nuts is unloading a '98.

forgot to mention the tanks at 200 meters i think my mausers are probably my most accurate milsurps they certainly are my favourites

I personally think that the K98k took a step BACKWARD from the Gew98 with respect to sights. The Lange-Vizier with it's pillared sides better frames targets for close-in snap shooting intuitively, while the K98k requires you to actually line things up.

the K98k sight IS cheaper and possibly more robust though, so you could make that argument for their adoption... though I'd not consider the Lange-Vizier to be a delicate mechanism.

Sights that start at 400m sure didnt want the enemy to get close did they!

Actually, the sights start at 100m and increment to 2000m.
(The ramp sight on the K98).

LOL :D

I agree, they aren't the best battle sight out there as quick target acquisition is more difficult than a peep sight. On the range though when noone is firing back at me, I personally prefer them to peep sights. YMMV...

I'll check sometime but the last one I fired at the NRA open day in the RCO 15 minutes of fun started at 400m. That was a G98 not a K98k.That was an Erfurt factory model from 1914 If I recall!

Sometimes called a K98a

The sights do start at 400...requiring one target to aim at and one target to hit at 100m (stacked one over the other)

been there, done that...still shot into less than 2 inches

I love the story behind the Russian captured k98 rifles, and I do believe they are collectable as well, absolutely chalk-full of history. Any Mauser is collectable, and these Rcs are fun to research, shoot and collect.

I have a book with pictures of the things stacked up alongside mountains of Steel helmets. I suppose they thought that if the Germans were going to leave them behind they didnt want their own population getting hold of them. Always currency in ainternational trade post war!
