So I decided to remove the Cosmoline off my first Sks today...even got the wifey on board to let me do it in the oven.

On the last go at it, I removed the stock from the oven, wiped off the remainder cosmoline.

Only one problem:mad::mad:, an area on the stock now looks like the stain disintegrated(guess instead of medium rare, I baked it well done)...not extremely bad but noticeable.

Asides from sanding it all down, does anyone have any tips on how to mask it i.e tinted wax/stain that I can rub in on that area of the stock?

Step 1 : flip over
Step 2 : place back in oven
Step 3 : repeat baking procedure
Step 4 : enjoy the now symetrical pattern, or sell it on the EE as a one-of-a-kind. For triple the price.

My guess is you baked the shellac off it. You can try using ethyl alcohol to dissolve the remaining and nearby shellac and smear it over the area to try and cover it up. Not sure how big the area is since like I said, my psychic link is down. ;)
 
use some ethanol or alcochol and rub the stock, the shellac will melt a bit and blend the part that is bubbled and it will be a lot less noticeable, might even not be able to tell

just be careful not to douse it in alcohol/ ethanol use a rag to rub the stock or else it'll take the finish off completely
 
Thanks for the pic. In a small area, try a Q-tip with ethyl alcohol and see if it reactivates the shellac. IPA probably won't do much.
 
personally I would not worry about a cheap 175.00 dollar disposable rifle but each to there own, Myself, I would use and abuse it and when it starts to cause you problems sell it on the exchange and buy a new one
 
Thanks for all the tips everyone. I was more pissed yesterday as I had spent my Saturday evening meticulously nurturing my Ruskie.

Don't want to change the stock as I love the color and wood. It was purchased as a shooter not collectable...so I'm just gonna enjoy it. The wife worked at a custom kitchen place and had a great wood touch up marker that Ive used (I know Bubba play). If inspected with a magnifying glass you will see a bit of an imperfection but shes still ###y. Might eventually try to strip her down and stain her...I got 1000s of rounds to put through her first.
 
Just buy a can of denatured Ethanol alcohol and carefully mist the surface and gently blend with a clean lint free cloth or 0000 steel wool. Shellac disolves in alcohol and that is how it was originally applied.

Collector value is gone now, so I think you should just strip it using furniture stripper, then stain it to a colour you like, followed by a few coats of polyurethane (oil based...water based isn't going to work if there's a hint of cosmoline).
