Picked this up almost a year ago now - didn't have an SKS at the time and figured, well everyone has one so I should too lol. Bought it from Weimajack's final batch of non-refurbs as it looked like a "nice" one and they were disappearing fast at the time. Once it arrived just gave it a quick wipe down (it was slathered in cosmo!) and stuck it in the safe - it was indeed a nice one, too nice to want to shoot, and it needed a good cleaning. So today, finally, got around to taking it all down to the smallest bits and cleaning all the cosmo from it. Boiling water was the cats ass for all the metal parts, nice and hot and bone dry after a few minutes with nary a greasy trace left! Stock took a bit more work, left in the sun for a bit and wipe/clean/wipe/clean back and forth - came out pretty good, but could maybe still improve on it a bit some more, especially nooks and crannies on the inside. But good enough, not greasy to the touch on the outside - reoiled all the metal bits and put it all back together. The firing pin was a slam fire waiting to happen but it moves freely now. Again, it really is a very nice sample and I still can't bring myself to shoot it, so back in the safe again. Took lots of pics (hey it was a slow day) - can't believe the number and variety of markings all over this rifle! Even the bolt was covered in various stamps. So, it was sold as "unrefurbed, unissued, probably unfired, all numbers matching (including mag)" so it'll stay that way and I'll pick up a beater version for a shooter.

Thanks, yes she's a keeper :) .

P.S. yes had eau-de-cosmo scent after all that lol, but did all the cleaning outside - beautiful sunny day, a few beer to keep cool...life is good! :)

nice rifle! I spent about 2.5 hours cleaning my unissued cosmo impregnated Red Lead Sled, thought I got it all.... 20 rounds into my test shoot the cosmoline started seeping out of the nooks and crannies. Every time I opened my gun locker for two or three months it was better than the smell of a stew after a cold fall hunt.

I love all the little markings on an SKS, just think of all the factory workers hands that these parts passed through. Just shows these were manufactured to a high standard. War is serious business!

Behind everyone of those marks is a person with a story, much more so of course with old wartime Mosin's, SVT's, etc and the soldiers who carried them. Can't help but feel that little extra weight when holding one of these rifles :)
