I have a scoped Polish M-44 that is a tack driver with it's favourite handloads. I have shot it at 400 yds several times without any problems. I can't speak for the rest of them, but the Polish M-44's are top class rifles. The workmanship is second to non, and they have chome lined floating barrels. With 125 grn hornadys and 56 grns of BL C- (2) it is a minute of angle rifle. It is such a dinky little thing that it does not really look like a serious rifle, but it is. They have great character. I bought another unfired one just two weeks ago.

Bah! If only it were an M38! I like the M44's bayonet...it's cool...it's just that it's in my way. I don't feel like I need it. I don't want to speer anything, I just want to shoot it! The whole point of guns is long range combat. :sniper:

Which is obviously what this damn little thing can do. Maybe in a couple years I'll buy an M38...I just hope I can snag one that's as finely finished as yours, as well as my buddy's. He's got a nice one too.

Ahh! It's paradise! Cheap rifles that really perform! :runaway:

You are right about the price I only paid $175.

I took the bayonet off my M-44 to try it without as can be seen in the pic. I found that it shoots noticeably better with it on so back on it went.

Keep an eye out on the EE, that's where I found my latest one. The seller did not want it as it was too new !

If only M38s were available that weren't shot out and counterbored, lots of minty M44s out there, not so much for M38s.

The Polish M44s are beautifully made rifles, and shoot well. The quality of manufacture, fit and finish is superior to most current sporting rifles. Sold 62 of the brand new ones through my business, didn't keep one for myself. Bought one in excellent used condition for $125 a few weeks ago. Someone had removed the bayonet, but fortunately I had a brand new one stashed away. Have cases and bullets for it, will have get a set of dies.
The condition and quality of M44s and 38s made elsewhere does not seem to match the Poles.
Having said that, for use as a precision rifle out to 600, there are better choices. The iron sights are pretty basic for that sort of shooting. Its not that the rifles aren't accurate, its just that there are other rifles that are easier to shoot at longer range.

Hey Potato, :)

Are you using a PU style mount on yours? Kinda looks like it but I'm only getting a glimpse of it from the wrong side. If yes, do you find it holds zero when removed/replaced?

I want to put scope my Polish M44 also. Trying to decide between PU mount or PE (www.accumounts.com). Or maybe even a Kalinka modern Warsaw Pact style quick detach lever mount.

It's a PU mount. I don't know if it holds zero or not as I have no reason to remove it. I would imagine it should be left alone when everything is set up properly.

I recomend going with the PE mount as you will have more scope opitions.

I have a quick release mount on my 858, it works fine and looks the part, but I think it would be out of place on a mosin. You would have limited scope options as with the PU.

A couple of tips, 1) There is no need to weld a bent bolt handle in place, mine is fixed using a tap and a die. It can be removed at will and a straight bolt handle reinstalled. 2) The drill bit's that accumount supply are rubbish, don't use them.

Spencer,
Thanks for the info. Sorry I addressed it to Potatoe - I errored on that.
I think your right - I'm leaning towards the PE setup now.
