Russian Nagant M1895 revolver in 7.62 Nagant (7.62x38R) How difficult is it to get ammo for these? Can you shoot a similar caliber in the same chamber?

The cartridges are hard to find. I've read that there is another .32 (Long or .32-20, or something like that) works in them, but I've never tried it. The cartridge has to be pretty long, but if you look on-line, I'm sure you can find dimensions and match them to some other cartridge that would work. There was someone here who got some about a year ago, and offered them. I bought a couple of boxes from him. If you ask in the ammo exchange you might find some. Otherwise, dies, brass and bullets as Tbolt says, are the way to go.

If you are going to reload, I have been told the Lee die set is for resizing 32-20 brass & doesn't work well to reload the original 7.62x38r cases. Apparently RCBS makes a set designed to work with the original brass, but they are about $160. The Nagant revolver is a "gas seal" design where the case mouth is pressed into the barrel upon firing. This seals the powder gases in the barrel & adds around 150 fps. Using 32 S&W ammo, the gas seal feature doesn't work, & you get a much louder report & gases/debris blasting out around the cylinder. Anyone shooting this ammo in a Nagant revolver should wear a heavy glove on their shooting hand & eye protection! I found this website while looking for info on reloading for the Nagant revolver.

Shot 32 S&W long - no problems at all (no gloves, no glasses)

However, there are some ammo for sale, just have to look for it.

I thought TradeEx sells all components and dies for it.
